Saving Database Records

This page contains instructions for saving records from various journal databases. It is important to save the records in a format that is compatible with EndNote. You can then import these records into your EndNote library using a filter.

Instruction are available for the following database providers

Cambridge Scientific Abastracts
Emerald
Informit
Ingenta
OCLC FirstSearch
Science Direct

How to save records from the Blackwell Synergy database for import to EndNote

When your search results are displayed, check the Highlight box in the records which interest you.

Before going on to view the next page of results, click on the link Download all highlighted abstracts to Reference Manager at the top of the results list.

This will display a new screen showing your selected references. At the bottom of this screen, the default format EndNote should be checked. The default option Direct Import should also be checked.

Click on the Download references button.

You will be prompted to choose a folder in which to save the references. They will be saved as a text file (*.txt).

In EndNote, open your library, then select File>Import.

At the Import Data File option, choose the file which you have downloaded.

At the Import Option, choose the default EndNote Import. Click on the Import button.

Check your references after import.

Note that abstracts will not be imported. However there is a link in the URL field of each reference to the abstract on the Synergy database. Click on this link to display the abstract. Copy the abstract and paste it into the Abstract field in your reference.

Use the Back button on your web browser to return to your search results. Select the next page of results and repeat the above procedure to highlight and download references.

How to save records from Informit for import into EndNote

Each Informit database has a different record structure. If you wish to import records into your EndNote library, you must search one database at a time . If you select multiple databases to search simultaneously, you will not be able to import your results into EndNote.

Check the records which you wish to download. Note that a maximum of 50 records can be downloaded at one time. We strongly recommend that you save your marked records frequently because the Informit system has a tendency to clear the marked records without warning.

Click on Save and a new screen will be displayed.

Under Records to Save , the option Marked Records should be checked.

We suggest that you uncheck the option Clear marked records after Save . Wait until you have saved your records and checked that the correct records have been saved before clearing the marked records.

Under Label Format , the option Short Labels should be selected.

Under Fields to Save , select Complete Record.

Under Extra Options , you can uncheck the option Save Search History.

Under Output Format , select Plain Text . Do not select the EndNote option if our filters page lists a filter for the database which you are searching. If there is no specific filter, then select EndNote .

The screen should now look something like this:

Now click on the Save Records button.

Save the file as a Text Document (*.txt).

Go to our filters page and download the filter which corresponds to the database which you have been searching. See the notes on that page about where to save the filter.

Open EndNote and import the file of saved records using the filter.

If there is no filter for the database on our filters page, then download the records in the EndNote output format. Make sure that you save them as a text document (*.txt). To import this file into EndNote, select EndNote Import as your Import Option . The records will require considerable editing after import.
