Endnote

Upgrade Information

In January 2007, Charles Darwin University upgraded the EndNote referencing tool from version 7 to version X (10).

There is no backward compatibility with EndNote version X to 7. If upgrading to version X it is important to uninstall the earlier version before installing the new version.

Tips: Before installing

EndNote X requires Windows 2000 and XP, if using a PC or OSX (10.1.5, 10.2) if using a Macintosh. You should ensure that you are using one of these operating systems in order to use EndNote X.

An EndNote X library can not later be used in EndNote 7. This is important to consider if you are collaborating with others who are using Endnote version 7 or earlier (versions 8 to X will work).

Backup copies should be made for all Endnote libraries and any output styles, filters or connection files that you have written, edited or obtained from elsewhere.

Documents formatted with EndNote 7 (or earlier versions) should preferably be unformatted before use with Endnote X. Furthermore, it is recommended that field codes are removed from documents before upgrading.

It is recommended that any earlier versions of EndNote are uninstalled before installing EndNote X.

After installing

When using EndNote X to open a library from an earlier version, Endnote X will offer to convert the library, giving it a new name. The original library will also remain, and this should be stored in a safe place, in case you wish to revert to an earlier version of EndNote.

When you open a Word document which you had been working on using an earlier version of EndNote, you may need to use the "Format Bibliography" command to format citations which you had unformatted before upgrading.
