Where do I start my research?

A good way to start your research is to define your topic by using subject dictionaries and to

How do I find journal articles (Databases)?

The library holds journals in print and electronic formats. The best way to access articles in these journals is by using the databases listed below. When you find an article you want to read, use the Library Catalogue and the E-journals list to see if we hold a print copy or have access to the electronic copy in full-text. Some databases listed will have direct links to the full-text article. The databases listed are just a few of the many available.

Nursing databases

CINAHL: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature
CINAHL is a cumulative index to nursing and allied health articles from worldwide, scientific literature presented for the needs of health professionals (via EBSCOhost). A very good tutorial can be found here, from the University of Florida

Cochrane library (Wiley Interscience)
Systematic reviews and other information that will assist in making diagnostic, treatment and other health care decisions. Select: Log On and then: Log on anonymously.

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition (EBSCOhost)
This database provides more than 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition also features abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. This database is updated on a daily basis.

MEDLINE via PubMed
PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

Academic Search Premier (EBSCOhost)
Provides full text for nearly 4,000 scholarly publications, including full text for more than 3,100 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage is multi-disciplinary.

Current Contents Connect (ISI)
This is a multidisciplinary current awareness web resource, providing access to complete bibliographic information of over 8,000 of the world's leading scholarly journals and more than 2,000 books.

Emerald Fulltext
A collection of over 42,000 searchable articles from over 100 management journals.  Subjects covered include Management, Human Resources Management, Library and Information Management, Marketing, Mechanical engineering, electronic and electrical engineering.

Ingenta
IngentaConnect offers one of the most comprehensive collections of academic and professional research articles online - some 17 million articles from 28,000 publications, including 6,100 online.

Science Direct
World's largest electronic collection of science, technology & medical full text  and bibliographic information.  Note that CDU does not have access to all material.

Web of Science (ISI)
Provides seamless access to the Science Citation Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index.

The National Social Health Statistical Data Library, HealthWIZ, on CD-ROM is used to disseminate comprehensive population health related statistical databases, across the Australian health services sector, for the purposes of clinical research, policy development and health services planning, particularly in regional areas. NOTE: This database is not accessible via the Internet. but can be borrowed from the CDU library to be installed with the help of ITM Support staff on local workstations

An indexing and full text database that provides Internet access to the scanned images of journal articles from published material on all aspects of health and medicine.

PsycINFO (EBSCOhost)
Iindexes and abstracts journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports, as well as citations to dissertations, all in the field of psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines.

SocINDEX with Full Text (EBSCOhost)
SocINDEX with Full Text is the world's most comprehensive and highest quality sociology research database. The database features more than 1,660,000 records with subject headings from a 19,300 term sociological thesaurus designed by subject experts and expert lexicographers. SocINDEX with Full Text contains full text for 344 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895, and 129 "priority" coverage journals. This database also includes full text for more than 700 books and monographs, and full text for 6,800 conference papers.

HighWire Press hosts the largest repository of free, full-text, peer-reviewed content, with 882 journals and 1,045,838 free, full-text articles online. With their partner publishers they produce 72 of the 200 most-frequently-cited journals. Some are embargoed for 12 months or so.

Directory of Open Access Journals
This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. There are now 1933 journals in the directory. Currently 472 journals are searchable at article level.
