This is a guide to locating pharmacy information at the Library both hardcopy and electronic at Charles Darwin University.

Where do I start my research?

A good way to start your research is to define your topic by using subject dictionaries and to
find background information in encyclopaedias such as:

An A-Z of Medicinal Drugs This dictionary is an ideal source of reference on the wide range of medicines available today. It covers over-the-counter, pharmacy, and prescription medicines. It contains entries for classes of drugs such as antibiotics, generic names Comprehensive information on side effects and interactions with other medicines are given, and there are entries on conditions and the medicines used to treat them. Terms used in the prescription and supply of medicine are provided

Australian prescription products guide

APPGuide includes more than 3,900 prescription and non-prescription Product Information monographs (PIs) and nearly 2000 Consumer Medicine Information listings (CMIs).

Consumer Medicine Information is free to browse without logging in. Subscription required to view all other information.

The APPGuide Online also includes extra reference material, such as Australian Approved Food Additive Numbers, Medicines in Pregnancy, Patient support organisations and a Pharmacological and Therapeutic index.

The APPGuide Online is updated monthly.

Concise Medical Dictionary This dictionary is useful both as a home medical guide and as an aid for all those working in the medical and allied professions. The entries are clearly laid out and jargon-free, making the book both accessible and informative.

How do I find journal articles (Databases)?

The library holds journals in print and electronic formats. The best way to access articles in these
journals is by using the databases listed below. When you find an article you want to read, use the
Library Catalogue
and the E-journals list to see if we hold a print copy or have access to the
electronic copy in full-text. Some databases listed will have direct links to the full-text article. The

Australian Medicines Handbook (AMH)

AMH is an independent, up-to-date, comparative, drug reference resource for Australian health care professionals.

eTG Complete

Searchable peer-reviewed clinical guidelines. Topics include analgesia, antibiotics, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrinology, neurology, gastroenterology, dermatology, palliative care, psychotropics and drug prescribing in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

ETG Complete is an electronic compilation of Therapeutic Guidelines. eTG Complete provides clear, practical, authoritative and succinct therapeutic information for health practitioners, for the management of patients with specific conditions. The information provided is a distillation of current evidence and opinion. The text is arranged into chapters and sections according to diagnostic entities. AMI - Australasian Medical Index Indexes and abstracts articles from over 100 Australian health and pharmacy journals not indexed for MEDLINE on all aspects of health and medicine. 1968+

APAIS-Health - Australian Public Affairs Information Service – Health Covers health and medicine in Australia and in particular the legal, social, economic and ethical aspects of health. Clinical articles are not indexed. 1978+ 

Cochrane library Evidence Based Medicine - A synthesis of existing research on the effects of health care

MEDLINE- PubMed PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

ScienceDirect Collection of science, technology and medicine full text and bibliographic information. Access includes limited number of subscription tiles as well as complimentary titles. Follow link to see pharmacology

Wiley Interscience

Ebsco is a cumulative index to nursing and allied health articles from worldwide, scientific literature presented for the needs of health professionals.

PsycINFO (EBSCOhost) indexes and abstracts journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports, as well as citations to dissertations, all in the field of psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines.

Highwire Press This is a division of the Stanford University Libraries. HighWire Press hosts the largest repository of free, full-text, peer-reviewed content, with 882 journals and 1,045,838 free, full-text articles online. With their partner publishers they produce 72 of the 200 most-frequently-cited journals. Some are embargoed for 12 months or so.

Sage Journals

SAGE publishes more than 485 journals in Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology and Medicine.SAGE Journals Online is the delivery platform that provides online access to the full text of individual SAGE journals.

Synergy interface (Blackwell Science Journals a full text journal database from Blackwell Publishers covering a range of disciplines.

Wiley Interscience features over 1000 journals, major reference works, online books and databases plus professional and management resources.

Directory of Open Access Journals The aim of the Directory of Open Access Journals is to increase the visibility and ease of use of open access, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.

Google Scholar A search engine  for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. If you are off campus then use this link Google Scholar. It will prompt you for your Internet login and password

OAIster This site provides access to institutional archives. You may be able to find full text of theses or difficult to source papers. As of Feb 2005, OAIster contains over 5 million records from more than 400 worldwide institutions.

Scirus A comprehensive science-specific search engine. Find scientific, scholarly, technical and medical data from the Web, reports and journal articles.
