Where do I start my research?

A good way to start your research is to define your topic by using subject dictionaries and to
find background information in encyclopaedias such as:

How do I find journal articles (Databases)?

The library holds journals in print and electronic formats. The best way to access articles in these
journals is by using the databases listed below. When you find an article you want to read, use the
Library Catalogue
and the E-journals list to see if we hold a print copy or have access to the
electronic copy in full-text. Some databases listed will have direct links to the full-text article. The

Ebsco is a cumulative index to nursing and allied health articles from worldwide, scientific literature presented for the needs of health professionals. Good tutorial oon using CINAHL, from University of Florida

Systematic reviews and other information that will assist in making diagnostic, treatment and other health care decisions.

HEAPS: Health Education and Promotion System

The HEAPS database contains information about Australian and New Zealand health promotion products and covers topics on regional and rural Australia, youth, ethnic communities, women's health and general practice. MEDLINE via PubMed
PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

Academic Search Premier EBSCOhost
Provides full text for nearly 4,000 scholarly publications, including full text for more than 3,100 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage is multi-disciplinary.

Current Contents Connect (ISI)
This is a multidisciplinary current awareness web resource, providing access to complete bibliographic information of over 8,000 of the world's leading scholarly journals and more than 2,000 books.

Emerald Fulltext
A collection of over 42,000 searchable articles from over 100 management journals.  Subjects covered include Management, Human Resources Management, Library and Information Management, Marketing, Mechanical engineering, electronic and electrical engineering.

Ingenta
IngentaConnect offers one of the most comprehensive collections of academic and professional research articles online - some 17 million articles from 28,000 publications, including 6,100 online.

Web of Science (ISI)
Provides seamless access to the Science Citation Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index.

The National Social Health Statistical Data Library, HealthWIZ, on CD-ROM is used to disseminate comprehensive population health related statistical databases, across the Australian health services sector, for the purposes of clinical research, policy development and health services planning, particularly in regional areas. NOTE: This database is not accessible via the Internet. but can be borrowed from the CDU library to be installed with the help of ITMS on local workstations

Meditext is an indexing and full text database that provides Internet access to the scanned images of journal articles from published material on all aspects of health and medicine.

PsycINFO (EBSCOhost) indexes and abstracts journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports, as well as citations to dissertations, all in the field of psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines.

Electronic journals on the web

E-Journal Portal is the CDU access point to all full text journals relating to health. This link is to the collection called Health Sciences: Public Health and Safety.

HighWire Press hosts the largest repository of free full-text life science articles in the world, with more than 1,300,000 free, full-text articles online.

The aim of the Directory of Open Access Journals is to increase the visibility and ease of use of open access scientific and scholarly journals thereby promoting their increased usage and impact. As at April 06 there were over 70 journals
