A good way to start your research is to define your topic by using subject dictionaries and to

How do I find journal articles (Databases)?

The library holds journals in print and electronic formats. The best way to access articles in these journals is by using the databases listed below. When you find an article you want to read, use the Library Catalogue and the E-journals list to see if we hold a print copy or have access to the electronic copy in full-text. Some databases listed will have direct links to the full-text article. The databases listed are just a few of the many available.

Academic Search Premier EBSCOhost
Provides full text for nearly 4,000 scholarly publications, including full text for more than 3,100 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage is multi-disciplinary.

PsycINFO (EBSCOhost)
Indexes and abstracts journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports, as well as citations to dissertations, all in the field of psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines.

SocINDEX (EBSCOhost)
Contains abstracts for more than 750 "core" coverage journals dating as far back as 1895. Covers all areas of sociology and closely related areas of study. These include abortion, criminology & criminal justice, demography, ethnic & racial studies, gender studies, marriage & family, political sociology, religion, rural & urban sociology, social development, social psychology, social structure, social work, socio-cultural anthropology, sociological history, sociological research, sociological theory and substance abuse & other addictions.


Synergy interface (Blackwell Science Journals)
A full text journal database from Blackwell Publishers covering a range of disciplines.

AusStats - Australian Bureau of Statistics
The statistical core of the ABS Web site available to students and staff of all Australia's Universities. It
includes full text files (such as spreadsheets) that can be downloaded. A price will be given, but this is just for recording purposes. There is no charge for Charles Darwin University staff or students. Please note: AusStats should not ask for a password, if it does, just click OK and it should let you in.

Formerly the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information and the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse, this site provides access to information and resources to help protect children and strengthen families. LOCATE - Latrobe Online Clearinghouse of Aged Care Teaching Essentials

LOCATE is a funded initiative of the Australian government. It aims to provide a clearinghouse of primarily Australian aged care resources which are useful to students, teachers and clinicians from 2006 onwards.The resources may be textbooks, reports, audio-visual resources, research reports, websites or more recent formats such as online audio streaming or podcasts. Australian Association of Social Workers
The AASW is the professional representative body of social workers in Australia.

Australian Council of Social Service
The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) is the national peak council of the community welfare sector in Australia. Major publications are Impact and The Australian Journal of Social Issues.

Australian Drug Foundation

Website of the ADF that contains information and support to assist in the prevention of alcohol and other drug problems.

Australian Institute of Family Studies
AIFS is a Commonwealth government research and information agency that promotes the identification and understanding of factors affecting marital and family stability in Australia.  Publications include Family Matters- which (apart from the most recent 3 issues) is available full text from the web site.

Australian Institute for Health and Welfare
Australia's national agency for health and welfare statistics and information.  The site contains many full text publications including Australia's Health and Australia's Welfare.

Australian Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous  Affairs
This site includes fact sheets, statistics, media releases, and other documentation relating to topics such as citizenship, multiculturalism, immigration, and refugees.

Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care
This site includes policy information, media releases, and other documentation relating to Australian health services.  It includes topics such as women's health, aged care, mental health, AIDS/HIV, alcohol and drugs.

Department of Family and Community Services
This department is responsible for a broad range of social policy issues including income support, housing policy, community support, disability services, child care services, family payments, child support and family relationships.

Office of the Status of Women
The Office of the Status of Women is a policy advisory unit concerned with bringing women's issues into the mainstream.  The site includes media releases, ministerial speeches and other material relating to topics such as women's economic security, women's health, and violence against women.
