A good way to start your research is to define your topic by using subject dictionaries and to

How do I find books on my subject?

To find books on your subject you can: 

search the  Library Catalogue using  the 'topic keyword(s)' or 'subject heading keyword(s)s' option. 
OR
browse the bookshelves using these call numbers:

How do I find journal articles (Databases)?

The library holds journals in print and electronic formats. The best way to access articles in these
journals is by using the databases listed below. When you find an article you want to read, use the
Library Catalogue
and the E-journals list to see if we hold a print copy or have access to the
electronic copy in full-text. Some databases listed will have direct links to the full-text article. The

BUILD - Australian Building Construction & Engineering Database - INFORMIT

produced by the Building Information Resource Centre of CSIRO, is a bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts material on worldwide information in the building, construction and engineering field including fire technology.

MAS Ultra - School Edition EbscoHost

Designed specifically for high school libraries, this database provides full text nearly 600 popular general interest and current events publications with information dating back as far as 1975 for key magazines.  Also provides more than 500 full text pamphlets, 268 full text reference books, 82,968 biographies, 90,915 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 107,135 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily

Standards Australia Online provides full text access to the complete collection of Australian, Joint Australian/New Zealand standards and most Standards Australia handbooks.
