30 October 2003
Bronwyn Wright, Lecturer in Art
and Design at Charles Darwin University, was today awarded first
prize for the ENERGEX ARBOUR Contemporary
Public Art Prize 2003 in Queensland.
Of more than 100 entries, Bronwyn was the only Northern Territory
entrant in the competition.
The Energex Arbour prize called for professional artists to submit
a single photographic image that investigates and observes the
evolution of the Australian family.
Her image 'Jump! 4EVER Family' was taken in The Swamp, an area
on the edge of Darwin’s northern suburbs and captures the
joy of parenthood and childhood as expressed by her neighbours.
The image has been unveiled today as a large photographic banner
along with images by the five runners up at Southbank in Brisbane
and will be on display until 12 December. Bronwyn’s first
prize is also acknowledged with $20,000.
“I am ecstatic to have won this award – prize money
of this level is not often found for photography,” said Bronwyn.
“Photography is not a cheap career to take up - I’ve
mortgaged everything to finance my art. I know I should be paying
off some of my debt with this money, but I’m not - I plan
to use it to upgrade my camera equipment to be able to shoot better
quality work,” Bronwyn said.
Previously a prize winner in the 2003 Linden Postcard Show, Bronwyn’s
work also features in galleries in the Northern Territory, Adelaide
and New Zealand. She has also produced documentaries for television
and received recognition for several short films.
Bronwyn is currently the Lecturer and Course Coordinator of Graphic
Design in the School of Art and Design for Charles Darwin University.
