Indigenous step into University now open

21 December 2004

A dedicated program that provides Indigenous people with a step into higher education arts studies at Charles Darwin University is now available.

"The Indigenous Pre-Arts Program introduces and evaluates students on the knowledge, academic literacy and study skills necessary for success in Arts studies in higher education," said Course Coordinator Cynthia Coyne.

"The program provides Indigenous students with an academic taste of what is required to successfully undertake an undergraduate arts degree."

With a teaching block starting on 10 January, the preparatory program is open to Indigenous people who have either completed Year 11 or 12, have undertaken some post school studies such as bridging courses and VET studies or have relevant work experience where graduate qualifications in the humanities and social sciences are valued and likely to enhance career prospects.

"Last program, we had seven students coming from Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Townsville and Canberra to participate in the intensive program. Importantly, the majority of students who passed the pre-arts program subsequently enrolled in an undergraduate degree at Charles Darwin University," Ms Coyne said.

"No other preparatory program within Australia has an intensive delivery mode as well as offer a multi-discipline focus."

Successfully completing this course enables students to enrol in a number of different Bachelor Degrees at Charles Darwin University. This includes Arts, Visual Arts, Library Information Management, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, Arts/Education, Resource Management, Behavioural Science and Welfare Studies.

"If Indigenous people want to work toward gaining a career in Anthropology, Archaeology, Psychology, Teaching, Forensics, Counselling, Community Development, Arts Advisors, Arts Administrator or Museum Curator then the Indigenous Pre-Arts Program is an entry pathway that will help them reach this goal," Ms Coyne stated.
