TAFE/VTE Lecturers end dispute with Charles Darwin University

20 December 2004

On Monday 20 December 2004 a dispute over the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement between the Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Australian Education Union (AEU) came to an end.

The dispute over pay increases and finalisation of the enterprise agreement has now been resolved, with all VET lecturers employed by CDU being offered:

  • 14 % over 3 years
    • 6% on certification of the agreement
    • 4% July 2006
    • 4% July 200
  • $800.00 before Christmas 2004
  • $400.00 on signing the Agreement
  • Agreement expires 31 December 2007
  • Improved conditions within the CDU

At a recent mass meeting of VET staff members voted to accept the offer and withdraw all industrial action.

The AEU-NT Secretary (Alan Perrin) stated, "This has been a long drawn out campaign to ensure that a reasonable rise was achieved for our members and our members have voted to accept - after 18 months of negotiations".

"The intervention of the Vice Chancellor Professor Helen Garnett was valuable and ensured that the final clauses were effectively sealed off and we could reach agreement" Mr Perrin said.

Prof Garnett said "I look forward to working with the VET sector next year to progress the reputation of Charles Darwin University as a dual sector institution, both within the NT as well as overseas".

Professor Garnett went on to say, "Both parties are now looking forward to progressing the status of CDU and ensuring that employers continue to support the local provider.  This agreement rewards the VET lecturers for the very hard work that they undertake on behalf of industry in the Northern Territory."
