L_R Carola Kuramotto de Debnarik(Undergraduate winner), Penny Wurm (AFUWNT President) and Anja Tait (Postgraduate winner) |
Ms Anja Tait , received the Postgraduate Scholarship. Anja is a musician, music therapist, educator and a PhD candidate in education, looking at improving outcomes for young Indigenous learners when links are created between literacy, numeracy, arts education and life skills acquisition.
Ms Carola Kuramotto de Bednarik received the Undergraduate Scholarship. Carola completed her undergraduate degree in science at the University this year, and plans to complete her Honours in environmental science in 2005.
Following the Scholarship presentations, last year’s Scholarship winners inspired the gathering with reports on their year of study.
Ms Amanda Hart (Indigenous undergraduate) who this year completed her BA Psychology (Honours), spoke about her research into “Housing and psychological well being for Indigenous Women in Katherine". Amanda returned to her home town to undertake the research, which involved research collaborations with Indigenous women in Katherine and supervision by Dr Mary Morris. Her work identified risk factors which can make it difficult for Indigenous women to sustain tenancy, and the consequences this has for well-being.
Ms Janet Wong (Postgraduate Scholarship), who is studying in the postgraduate medicine program at Flinders University and Royal Darwin Hospital, spoke about "Studying Medicine in the Northern Territory". Janet is passionate about returning to the NT after graduating, and working on the unique public health problems faced by NT communities.
AFUW-NT Scholarship applications close in October each year, and are offered to an undergraduate, an Indigenous undergraduate and a postgraduate woman each year. If you would like more information, please visit our website at http://www.afuw-nt.org.au/index.html
