The joint entry was kicked off today with donations by TopFM Radio Presenter and Voice of the V8 Supercars, Trevor Scott, and the University’s Executive Director Corporate Services, Dr Scott Snyder.

“It takes about an hour to do and its great that the University and TopFM are doing this together for such a worthy cause,” Mr Scott said.

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service launched their annual Summer Heroes Blood Rush this week challenging organisations to donate 250 litres of blood before 28 February 2005. NT Regional Manager of Blood Service, Jim Ramsay, said that the University/TopFm effort is among the first entries into the Challenge.

“Its great that two high profile NT based organisations have taken up the Challenge and I wish them well on achieving their target. I hope that it inspires others to participate as well,” Mr Ramsay stated.

University Coordinator of the University/TopFM entry, Kirsty Mawer, said that the joint effort was a positive Territory wide affair.

“The University has a pool of more than 1,000 staff located across the NT that can potentially donate blood. TopFM staff will also be donating and helping to inspire staff to get on board for this challenge,” Mrs Mawer explained.

"Staff can pledge donations individually with the Blood Service in Alice Springs or Darwin but we are also arranging dedicated schedules with the Blood Service for small groups from the University’s Casuarina, Palmerston and Alice Springs Campus to donate at specific times.

"As part of the Challenge a weekly tally will be available to check progress of the University/TopFM entry and see how many donations we need to win. It’s a big job as we are looking for 532 donations – but the cause, especially at this time of year, is worth the effort," Mrs Mawer said.

Anyone between 18-70 years, weighing at least 45kg and in general good health may be eligible to donate. Appointments can be made by calling 131495 or visiting www.donateblood.com.au
