16 December 2004

the University RATS, sing to help raise money for the Salvation Army
The University RATS

Christmas carols will get a different treatment Friday evening with Charles Darwin University's football team, the University RATS, warbling out carols across Darwin to help raise money for the Salvation Army.

Commencing at 6:30pm, the dulcet tones of twenty University RATS will be heard at clubs, pubs and restaurants around Casuarina, Parap, Fannie Bay and Cullen Bay before ending up in Darwin City's Mitchell Street.

Each Christmas since 1991, the University RATS have offered their special brand of Jingle Bells, Silent Night and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer at selected Darwin venues. The 'Choir's' favourite is "Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly."

"It started when a group of team mates got together and committed to doing something for the community. It's gone from there and to date we have raised more than $40,000," University RATS President, Justin Lefebvre said

"It's all a bit of fun and a good opportunity to raise money for a great cause. Hopefully the Darwin community can help better last year's record efforts where we raised over $5,000.

"We have gained great local support for the evening with the Tour Tub driving us to the various venues and CUB and Diageo ensuring that our throats don't get too dry," Mr Lefebvre said, who has been on ten University RATS carol nights so far.

"The trick is to not get too wobbly before the end of the night, although we have a reserves list if needed."
