Four Northern Territory entries have been selected
for progression into the national finals of the Do it with Denim
competition.
The NT finalists are:
· Helen Markland for her creation inspired by Dame Nellie
Melba;
· Lisa Murray for her ‘Slim Dusty’ garment;
· Amee Brown’s outfit was inspired by the rock star
movie ‘Almost Famous’; and
· Joanna Roberts who drew motivation from Icelandic musician,
Bjork
“All entries were of a high standard and demonstrated great
creativity by the students,” University Fashion Lecturer,
Armida Monteith, said.
“The four NT Finalists now become semi-finalists in the National
competition and the garments will go to Sydney where three will
be chosen for the next stage of the competition.
“Winners of the next stage will be notified on 9 July and
they go on to the National judging to be held 2 August in Sydney.
“The NT Finalists have now been posted away to Sydney for
the next round of judging with the Dame Nellie Melba inspired garment
recently photographed for inclusion in fashion icon magazine, Harpers
Bazaar.
“The other NT entries other entries will be on display at
Casuarina Square from 2 - 5 August.”
Open to tertiary students studying fashion design, 17 Charles Darwin
University students entered 18 items in the Doing it with Denim
competition by recycling denim clothing into funky outfits under
the theme of music legends
Inspiration for the NT entries also included Blondi, KISS, Cindi
Lauper, Kylie Minogue, Cher, Elvis and Madonna.

Do It with Denim is conducted by Jeans for Genes on behalf of the
Children’s Medical Research Institute and in association with
the Australian fashion industry. The national winner will be included
in the catwalk presentation of the 2004 Autumn/Winter Fashion week
held in Melbourne during November.
