Sally Jacka and Grant Staben have been recognised for their ‘green’ passion with a $2,500 George Brown Scholarship to be undertaken at Charles Darwin University.

Established by Darwin City Council through the Charles Darwin University Foundation, the George Brown Scholarship honours the contributions of former Darwin Lord Mayor, George Brown, to the environmental development of Darwin.

Ms Jacka of Humpty Doo, is completing a Bachelor of Environmental Science and has been involved with a number of community environmental initiatives and process at Humpty Doo, Knuckey Lagoon. Darwin Harbour and Darwin Airport

“The scholarship is a great incentive and will help me enormously in completing my studies,” Ms Jacka said.

Mr Staben, father of four from Palmerston, said the Scholarship will help financially as he works to change his career from carpentry to work or further study in the field of environmental science.

“I have a very supportive family environment and this Scholarship will help make things a touch easier,” Mr Staben said.

Mr Staben was a previous winner of the Greening Australia Award for Highest Achievement in Lands, Parks and Wildlife Management and is also completing a University UTROP award where he gained paid work assisting PhD research into Gamba Grass.

The Lord Mayor of Darwin, Peter Adamson, presented Ms Jacka and Mr Staben with their George Brown Scholarship in the Darwin City Council Function Room last week.

The annual George Brown Scholarship is awarded to a student at any level of study (VTE or Higher Education) who has demonstrated passion, ability and initiative in the area of horticultural or environmental science. Along with $2,500 in cash, the successful student will be offered vocational employment with Darwin City Council during university breaks in the year of the Scholarship.
