Sally Jacka and Grant
Staben have been recognised for their ‘green’ passion
with a $2,500 George Brown Scholarship to be undertaken at Charles
Darwin University.
Established by Darwin City Council through the Charles Darwin
University Foundation, the George Brown Scholarship honours the
contributions of former Darwin Lord Mayor, George Brown, to the
environmental development of Darwin.
Ms Jacka of Humpty Doo, is completing a Bachelor of Environmental
Science and has been involved with a number of community environmental
initiatives and process at Humpty Doo, Knuckey Lagoon. Darwin Harbour
and Darwin Airport
“The scholarship is a great incentive and will help me
enormously in completing my studies,” Ms Jacka said.
Mr Staben, father of four from Palmerston, said the Scholarship
will help financially as he works to change his career from carpentry
to work or further study in the field of environmental science.
“I have a very supportive family environment and this Scholarship
will help make things a touch easier,” Mr Staben said.
Mr Staben was a previous winner of the Greening Australia Award
for Highest Achievement in Lands, Parks and Wildlife Management
and is also completing a University UTROP award where he gained
paid work assisting PhD research into Gamba Grass.
The Lord Mayor of Darwin, Peter Adamson, presented Ms Jacka and
Mr Staben with their George Brown Scholarship in the Darwin City
Council Function Room last week.
The annual George Brown Scholarship is awarded to a student at
any level of study (VTE or Higher Education) who has demonstrated
passion, ability and initiative in the area of horticultural or
environmental science. Along with $2,500 in cash, the successful
student will be offered vocational employment with Darwin City
Council during university breaks in the year of the Scholarship.
