Scholarship keeps students in Centre

29th June 2004

The inaugural Alice Springs Town Council Educational Scholarship to encourage local students to remain in Alice Springs and undertake tertiary studies at the new Charles Darwin University has been awarded.

The $1000 Educational Scholarship was presented to nursing student, Kylie Reeves, at a ceremony at the Town Council meeting on Monday 28 June.

In awarding the scholarship to Ms Reeves, the Alice Springs Mayor, Fran Kilgariff, congratulated her on an outstanding application.

“Kylie's application was one of eight very impressive applications. I’m particularly pleased that the inaugural scholarship has attracted such a large number of applicants,” said Mayor Kilgariff.

In receiving her scholarship, Ms Reeves thanked the Alice Springs Town Council and explained that she has recently completed her nursing exams and is about to commence her student placement requirements with the Alice Springs Hospital.

“I intend to use the $1000 to assist with paying my rent during the remainder of my training.”

Charles Darwin University Alice Springs Campus Leader, Lyle Mellors, who attended the award said, “Scholarships such as this auger well for the future of Alice Springs students.”
