The international education market in China is the focus of a free seminar to be presented by Ms Katharine Campbell, Education Counsellor with the Australian Embassy in Beijing at Charles Darwin University tomorrow.
The Peoples Republic of China is Australia’s biggest source of international students with more than 57,000 enrolments occurring in 2003 – an increase of 20 per cent from the previous year. Total international student enrolments in Australia during 2003 increased by 10 per cent on the previous year to more than 300,000.
“Internationally there is strong competition amongst Australian institutions to secure international student enrolments. This is true of all the educational sectors namely higher education, vocational education, school education and ELICOS,” the Director International at Charles Darwin University, Dennis Meehan, said.
“Historically there has been a relatively small percentage of international student enrolments in the Northern Territory compared to other Australian states.
“However, the formation of the new Charles Darwin University, the re-tailoring of our market awareness programs to highlight the distinctive differences that we offer and drawing upon the insights from people such as Katharine Campbell are factors that can help to realise increased international student enrolments in the Territory in the future.”
Ms Campbell was appointed as Counsellor (Education, Science and Training) Beijing in July 2002 – moving from her previous posting in Jakarta. The Education Counsellor is the senior Australian Education International representative in the country.
Ms Campbell’s career has been principally in the field of public policy and program management within various portfolio areas of both the Australian and Northern Territory governments including health, community services, employment, education and housing. Her earlier career focussed on the delivery of government programs for remote Indigenous people and management of Commonwealth-State relationships.
