Leave entitlements
Annual recreation leave
University staff members covered by the Agreement are entitled to 30 working days annual leave for each year of paid continuous service. Leave accrues at the rate of 2.5 days for each completed month of service.
Long service leave
Long Service Leave provisions at the University are in accordance with the Long Service Leave (Commonwealth Employees) Act 1976 and the Agreement. These provisions entitle employees to three months (90 calendar days) leave on completion of 10 years of paid continuous service with the University. Eligible staff may access their entitlement to long service leave after seven (7) years of service recognised by the University (the qualifying period). Subject to certain conditions, this University recognises service at other Australian universities and other employers as defined by the University Council. Requests for recognition of prior service MUST be made at time of appointment.
Paid Parental Leave
What is the Paid Parental Leave scheme?
The Paid Parental Leave scheme is available to eligible working parents who have a new baby or adopt a child on or after the 1 January 2011. The taxable Parental Leave Pay can be received in conjunction with other types of employer provided leave. Alternatively, eligible parents may choose to receive Baby Bonus, which will continue to be available.
To assist you with making a decision about which payment best suits your current financial circumstances you can use the Paid Parental Leave Comparison Estimator. The estimator assumes that you are eligible for both Parental Leave Pay and Baby Bonus. You should check your eligibility for both payments before using the estimator.

Salary packaging
Charles Darwin University offers staff members the opportunity to negotiate the structure of their salary payments through Salary Packaging.
Salary packaging:
- Allows fractional and full-time employees to choose to receive salary payments as a combination of cash (paid into your nominated account) and approved benefits.
- Allows you to have certain benefits e.g. motor vehicles, notebook computers, superannuation, paid directly by the CDU from your pre-tax income
- Is an Australian Taxation Office approved means of allowing employees to effectively restructure their income so and potentially reduce the amount of tax paid to maximise net salary.
It is important for employees to make an informed decision about what benefits best suit their personal circumstances and to ensure that salary is not over committed.
Two salary packaging providers have been appointed by Charles Darwin University to implement and administer the University’s salary packaging scheme. You may select to use either one of the following agencies to manage your Salary Package:
Salary packaging UniSuper and Award Plus Plan contributions
Superannuation payments, including any additional voluntary contributions, do not attract Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT). Additional contributions may be made through UniSuper’s Award Plus Plan.
Please note:
- Benefits can only be provided to the extent that the total cost to the University of providing the benefits requested plus the reduced salary does not exceed the Total Employment Cost (TEC). The TEC is a set figure assigned to each position by the University.
- The University determines the salary and benefits offered to employees.
