Generic Skills Workshops
Generic skills development at Charles Darwin University
In response to the changing research training requirements in Australia the University has implemented a formal generic skills development program, commencing in 2006. This program consists of a range of workshops and seminars made available to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students throughout their candidature.
All students commencing a Higher Degree by Research program from 1 January 2006 are required, as a condition of their candidature, to participate in a minimum of five generic skills workshops/seminars throughout the duration of their candidature. It is expected that within four months of commencement, students, in consultation with their supervisor(s), will prepare a generic skills training schedule that will form part of their detailed research proposal.
The Common Rules documents for PhD and Masters by Research students specify that external candidates must spend a minimum of nine weeks on campus throughout the duration of their candidature. By providing annual programs of generic skills training workshops in advance it is expected that external students will be able to meet their generic skills training requirements by co-ordinating their time spent on campus with at least some of the workshops. In addition, wherever possible, efforts will be made to videotape sessions so they can be made available externally.
In 2008 Charles Darwin University offered the majority of generic skills workshops during a "Generic Skills Week". View the program for 2008, held between 28 April and 2 May >>
It is likely that the 2009 program will offer similar workshops and be held at approximately the same time of year. A small number of workshops are offered outside generic skills week.
