Postgraduate research supervisors

Register of higher degree by research supervisors

Who needs to apply for inclusion on the register?

All supervisors of CDU postgraduate research students must apply to be included on the CDU register of supervisors.

It is important that all supervisors are included in the register. If you are about to start supervising, or are currently supervising, CDU postgraduate research students and have not yet applied to be included on the Register, please submit an application as soon as possible.

How do I apply for addition to the register?

First, you should make yourself familiar with the Addition to the Register of Higher Degree by Research Supervisors Process (.pdf).

You will need to:

Please DO NOT submit double-sided copies.

NB: Forms without Head of School approval and/or without CV attached will be returned to the applicant.

Closing dates

Applications are accepted throughout the year. They are considered at Research Panel meetings and it is a good idea to make sure they are lodged at the Office of Research & Innovation at least two weeks before the next meeting. Applications received after the closing date for the agenda of one Panel meeting will normally be held over and included in the papers for the following Research Panel meeting.

Certificate

Supervisors who are admitted to the Register of Supervisors are sent a letter and duplicate copies of a Register of Supervisors certificate, which indicate the expiry date of the registration. The certificate will also show at what levels the supervisor is registered to supervise, i.e.

  • Associate Supervisor for Masters
  • Principal Supervisor for Masters
  • Associate Supervisor for PhD
  • Principal Supervisor for PhD

Supervisors need to sign as supervisor on both copies, and return them to the Office of Research & Innovation. The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) will countersign and a single signed copy will be sent out to the supervisor. The second copy will be kept on file at the Office of Research & Innovation.

Renewal

As part of the University’s quality assurance processes membership of the Register of Supervisors is regularly reviewed. From 2008, membership is granted for an initial period of five years, upon expiry of which an application for renewal will be required if registration is to be maintained for a further period. In assessing applications for renewal the CDU Research Panel will take into account supervisory performance over the prior term of registration and the recommendation of the relevant head of school.

Upgrading

Where applicable, a supervisor may apply to upgrade their registration to a higher level within the five year period. This can be done in the same way as a new application, by submitting the Application for Register of Supervisors form along with a copy of your CV. The application will need a signature of authorisation/support from your Head of School before being forwarded to the Office of Research & Innovation.

Supervisor's workshop

Supervisors who have not already done so are required to attend supervisor training. The Office of Research & Innovation and PMD coordinate a supervisor workshop for CDU staff and for external supervisors who are able to attend. This is generally run once a year. Supervisors who have attended previous supervisor workshops, are welcome to attend again. Further information about the Supervisor Workshop, as well as other important information for supervisors will be sent out to supervisors on the research-supervisors emailing list.
