Research Scholarships
The University has a number of Government and University funded Research Scholarships available for award each year.
Scholarships are normally 2 years duration for Masters by Research students and 3 years duration for PhD students.
In all cases, eligibility conditions apply.
Domestic Scholarships available for 2014 commencement

Domestic Scholarships available for 2014 commencement
Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)
Successful applicants must commence by 31 March 2014 unless approved otherwise.
Australian Postgraduate Awards are prestigious scholarships funded by the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) and provide an indexed stipend - paid fortnightly - of $24,653 (2013 rate) per annum. Additional benefits include paid sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, relocation and a thesis allowance.
To be eligible, you must:
- be an Australian citizen, or a permanent resident;
- have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours, or equivalent;
- be undertaking a Higher Degree by Research;
- be enrolled as a full-time student;
- not hold an equivalent, or higher, research qualification;
- not have previously have held a Commonwealth-funded postgraduate research scholarship, unless it was terminated within six months of payments commencing;
- not be receiving an equivalent award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the APA stipend rate to undertake the degree.
Successful applicants will also be awarded a Commonwealth-funded Research Training Scheme (RTS) place, which will cover their tuition fees.

University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (UPRS)
Successful applicants must commence by 31 March 2014 unless approved otherwise.
These scholarships are offered by Charles Darwin University to
postgraduate research students undertaking projects that fall within
the University's research priority areas.
UPRS are open to Australian
and overseas applicants and currently offer stipend valued at $24,653 (2013 rate) per annum.
To be eligible, applicants must:
- have completed a Bachelor Degree with Second Class Honours (Division A), or equivalent;
- be undertaking a Higher Degree by Research;
- be enrolled as a full-time student;
- not hold an equivalent, or higher, research qualification.
Additional benefits include paid annual leave, sick leave and
maternity/paternity leave entitlements, relocation and thesis allowance. Overseas applicants must be able to cover their course tuition fees to apply. Find out about the conditions of the award.

Domestic fee waiver scholarships cover course fees for domestic students and vary in value from course to course. To be eligible, you must be a domestic student and qualify for entry into a Masters by Research, or a PhD degree. Contact research.degrees@cdu.edu.au for details.
International Scholarships available for 2014 commencement
International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)
Successful applicants must commence their studies by 31 March 2014 unless approved otherwise.
These scholarships are funded by the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) and are available to outstanding overseas students.
The IPRS pays for tuition fees and the cost of a standard overseas student health care cover policy. The health care cover is also provided for dependents relocating to Australia with the successful applicant.
To be eligible, you must:
- be an overseas student;
- meet international student visa requirements as specified by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship;
- be commencing full-time enrolment for the first time in a Higher Degree by Research at an Australian University;
- be undertaking study in one of the University's research priority areas;
- not hold an equivalent, or higher, research qualification;
- not have held an AusAID scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the IPRS;
- not be receiving any other Australian Government funded course tuition scholarship.
Please note: Current high quality international research students may apply if they commenced their Higher Degree by Research in the previous year but, due to the timing of their applications and subsequent enrolment, were unable to apply for an IPRS for that year.

Prestigious International Research Tuition Scholarships (PIRTS)
Successful applicants must commence their studies by 31 March 2014 unless approved otherwise.
These Scholarships are supported by the University and are available to outstanding overseas students who have secured adequate alternative funds to cover all living, health care cover and other expenses. Alternative funds may include a Stipend Scholarship (eg. UPRS).
The PIRTS are designed to augment the University’s research productivity, quality and global reach by:
- attracting high quality international researchers into funded University research projects
- targeting high quality researchers from among our strategic partner universities in Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Timor Leste, and also from our long term research linkages with European and US universities
- enabling access for research students with stipend scholarships from foreign governments and agencies, eg. the Chinese Scholarships Council, Chilean Government, Indonesian, Malaysian and Vietnamese governments.
The PIRTS pays for research tuition fees and, where appropriate, tuition costs for a maximum 10 weeks Intensive English Language Course (ELICOS).
To be eligible, you must:
- be commencing full-time enrolment to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at Charles Darwin University;
- be an overseas student with a secure source of funds to cover all living, health cover and other expenses;
- meet international student visa requirements as specified by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship;
- have completed a Bachelors Degree with First Class Honours or equivalent;
- have demonstrated excellence in academic or professional achievement;
- have a well prepared research proposal;
- have strong referees reports from at least two high level academic referees;
- have attained an overall IELTS of 6.5, with no band less than 6;
- be commencing full-time enrolment for the first time in a Higher Degree by Research at an Australian University;
- be undertaking study in one of the University's research priority areas;
- not hold an equivalent, or higher, research qualification;
- not be receiving any other funded course tuition scholarship.

Note - COMPLETE applications must be received by the closing dates listed. INCOMPLETE applications will not be considered.
Closing dates for Scholarship Applications
For commencement in Semester 1, the closing date for domestic scholarship applications is 31 October in any given year and for international scholarships is 30 September in any given year.
If you are successful, you are expected to start no later than 31 March in the year for which your award is granted. Special circumstances may allow you to start later - up to 30 June.
For commencement in Semester 2, the closing date for domestic scholarship applications is the first Friday in May and students must commence by 31 August that year.
Applications for domestic fee waivers must be received by 28 February for a Semester 1 start; and by 31 July for a Semester 2 start.
