Research interestsHeather is an environmental sociologist with a multi-disciplinary background in biological, environmental and social sciences, and has worked in both government and academia as a researcher, environmental educator, lecturer and science communicator. This includes more than ten years spent as a wildlife biologist studying Australian marsupials and native rodents, during which she co-authored two national award-winning books. Her PhD, completed at the ANU’s Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies in 1996, was on Australian attitudes to wildlife. Heather also has extensive experience with the Australian non-government sector, having held senior positions in national and state conservation organisations. She has worked at five Australian universities: the University of Adelaide, the Australian National University, the University of Canberra, the University of Western Sydney, and now Charles Darwin University. She most recently worked for the Australian Government’s Bureau of Rural Sciences, where she undertook research on social aspects of a wide range of environment-related issues in rural and regional Australia, covering topics in fisheries’ management, farming, forestry, native vegetation conservation, land use, capacity building for natural resource management, social impacts of drought, and biosecurity. Heather has particular interests in knowledge cultures and ways of effectively communicating and integrating knowledge across social and cultural boundaries, including the boundaries between scientists and policy makers. She also maintains a keen research interest in the social and human dimensions of wildlife conservation. Member, The Australian Sociological Association (TASA) and its Environment and Society Thematic Group
