Research interests

Julian’s interests lie mostly in commercial utilisation of wildlife and resource management especially related to enterprise development in remote Indigenous Australian communities.

He is also interested in the use of Bayesian modelling to help predict distribution of plant species for commercial utilisation. This methodology should assist Aboriginal Resource Centres and landowners in determining the extent of their resources which is necessary for management plans and working with the regulatory body (PWSNT) who issue permits for commercial harvest.

Current projects

  • Natural resource management and enterprise development: can they improve Indigenous livelihoods?
  • Alternative production from marginal lands and focused on sustainable Indigenous development and commercial utilisation. Objectives: to identify what enterprises utilising wildlife are currently operating on Aboriginal land, the positive and negative attributes which contribute towards the success or failure of this type of enterprise, and suggest changes to government policy and support which might progress the success of this type of enterprise development (National Landcare Program).
