Research interests

Kerstin is an agricultural/environmental economist with strong interest in the economics of sustainable livestock production. She specializes in the application of non-market evaluation techniques in the field of natural resource management, in particular in the design and analysis of choice models.

Prior to working at CDU, Kerstin completed her PhD at the Center for Development Research (ZEF) in Bonn. She conducted her research in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya on the broad topic of “Use, exchange and conservation of animal genetic resources”. In East Africa, she collaborated with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the GTZ. After finishing her PhD, Kerstin undertook some consultancy jobs for the UNDP, FAO and ILRI and assisted in writing the First Report on the State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for the FAO.

Her research interests within the School for Environmental Research are as follows:

  • Non-market evaluation (benefit cost analyses, contingent valuation, choice modelling, travel cost method)
  • Payment for environmental services (PES)
  • The economics of climate change adaptation
  • Benefits and costs of pest control
  • The economics of the sustainable use, conservation and exchange of animal genetic resources (AnGRs)
  • Tropical livestock production and in particular the economics of pastoralism.
