Research interests

Hmalan, who holds connections to the Tiwi/Iwaidja and Kaytej/Warlpiri tribes of the Northern Territory, is a Research Associate at the School for Environmental Research (SER), Charles Darwin University. Hmalan works primarily on projects within the Tropical Rivers and Coastal Knowledge (TRaCK) research consortium and more broadly regarding Indigenous engagement in SER projects. She is coordinator of the Aboriginal Research Practitioners’ Network hosted by SER.

She is interested in natural resource management and its connections with top end Indigenous communities. Through her work she has increased her understanding of participatory research tools and their applications within an Indigenous research context. She is interested in supporting and strengthening Indigenous engagement in research. She currently works in Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland and internationally in New Caledonia.
