Northern Territory Mobility Project
The Northern Territory population has a very high rate of turnover compared to other Australian states and territories. Approximately one-quarter of the NT’s resident population in 2001 had lived somewhere else five years earlier, compared to less than 10 percent in other states. The highly mobile nature of this population has significant social and economic impacts. It highlights the need for policy makers to create a sustainable workforce and to retain knowledge and social capital.
Why people move to the NT, why they stay, why they leave, and what might encourage people to stay longer are critical questions in the Territory’s development. The NT Mobility Project seeks to explore these questions with a view to informing government policy and strategic planning directions and outcomes. The focus, however, goes beyond the general population and data will be collected on major professional groups including engineers, dental professionals, nurses and midwives, and accountants.
Partners: NT Treasury, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and the NT Department of Business, Economic and Regional Development
Funding: Australian Research Council Linkage Project grant
