Biography
Dr Gary Robinson achieved a BA Hons with the University Medal, followed by his PhD in 1993, at the University of NSW. He currently works in the School for Social and Policy Research (SSPR) in the role of Principal Research Fellow and leader of the research theme Childhood Intervention, Parenting and Development, responsible for the development of school-based child and family intervention programs.
Gary joined SSPR and the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) at Charles Darwin University in 2003, previously occupying a number of positions in Northern Territory University (NTU), including Senior Lecturer, Sociology, Associate Dean of the Schools of Social Sciences and Humanities, later, Social Sciences and Management, and Director of the Centre for Social Research in the Faculty of Law, Business and Arts.
With over fifteen years of Ethnographic research into household and family patterns among Indigenous people of North Australia, he became Project Leader and Chief Investigator of the Tiwi Coordinated Care Trial Local Evaluation in 1997, and went on to lead a follow-up study of renal treatment outcomes on the Tiwi Islands (with Professor Ross Bailie & Dr Zhiqiang Wang of the Menzies School of Health Research). This research led directly to the development of the ABCD program, a national program of quality improvement in chronic disease care, led by Professor Bailie.
The CCT evaluation also led to the development of the Ngaripirliga’ajirri and Let’s Start Programs, one of the first Australian attempts to redevelop parenting and early intervention programs specifically for at risk Indigenous primary and preschool children and their families. This research involves collaboration with the Telethon Institute of Child Health Research at UWA, Perth.
Dr Robinson played a role in the establishment of the National Accelerated Literacy Program at SSPR, and remains involved as the leader of the evaluation of NALP. He is presently a program Leader of Social and Emotional Wellbeing, at the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health, a member of the National Program Reference Group for Health@Homeplus, a national project of the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, and is on the ARACY ARC/NHMRC National Network Advisory Committee.
Dr Robinson is a Fellow of the Australian Anthropological Society and a member of the American Anthropological Association and The Australian Sociological Association.
