Blackboard is CDU's Learning Management System (LMS) and offers staff and students the ability to access learning materials, discussion forums, 'live classrooms', announcements, quizzes, voice tools and help with unit management.
Learnline is the name of CDU’s online learning environment and includes Blackboard, CDU's web server and CDU's media streaming server.
Activation of your student account
Students must first activate their Charles Darwin University computer account before they access Learnline. You can activate your student computer account using the general access computers at the Information Centre, Orange 1, in the Library, Red 8, or at the Support Desk at Casuarina campus. If you have access to your own computer, all you need is access to the internet.
Alternatively, you can use any of the computers in the general purpose labs. You can log on to them through the user account ‘kiosk’ with the password ‘cdukiosk’.
Go to http://eagle.ntu.edu.au/ntu/apps/studentnet.nsf/mainpage?openform
Enter your student number preceded by a lower case ‘s’, i.e. s123456 to check your status of your account. It will prompt you to activate your account, unless you have done so previously.
If you have previously activated your computer account and know your password, you can change your password on the same site.
If you do not know your password for a previously activated account, you will need to contact the Help Desk on 08 8946 6600 during business hours.
Your username is your student ID preceded by a lower case 's', i.e. s123456.
I cannot log into Learnline, what should I do?
If you are still not able to gain access, call the IT Support Desk on 08 8946 6600.
The password you use is the one you chose when you activated your student account.
What does the red triangle on the activation page mean?
It means that part of your account has not been activated.
What computer requirements do I need before I can use Learnline?
See System requirements for using Learnline (,pdf, 41KB), also available from the Learnline log-in page.
If I enrol online how long will it take to access the units on Learnline?
You will be able to access the units you have enrolled in the day after you have enrolled online. Note that access is semester based, so if you enrol for the year, only the units for the current semester are accessible from the time the semester starts.
What is the first day I can access my Learnline units?
Learnline units become available to you by the first day of the semester. If you are not sure when your semester starts, please visit www.cdu.edu.au/studentnet/calendar.html.
How do I know if my unit it is on Learnline?
You should check each unit on the unit website. Alternatively, contact Library and Information Access on 08 8946 6483 or email bbsupport@cdu.edu.au.
Do I have to wait until the first day of semester to access information on Learnline?
The lecturer will decide whether they want their unit to be available to students prior to the first day of semester. Where units are available early, students should not assume that lecturers will be available prior to the first day of semester.
If the unit has been checked for content on Learnline and there is none then you will have to contact Library and Information Access on 08 8946 6483 or email bbsupport@cdu.edu.au - you will be advised what mode your study will be delivered in.
Why can't I see my other units on Learnline?
Not all units at Charles Darwin University are available on Learnline.
Learnline or print-based? Find out if your unit has a Learnline component or print-based materials by visiting the unit search page. Each unit indicates the relevant learning method:
- Learnline: Internet access is required as this subject has an online component provided.
- Print-based materials: Students will be provided with some print-based study materials.
Note: for external mode, the most commonly used delivery method is Learnline. If an external mode unit also indicates that print-based materials will be sent to you, these materials are supplementary only, and your main method of learning will be via Learnline. Do not wait until your print materials get sent to you, as this will delay your studies.
Should you have any queries please contact student.admin@cdu.edu.au or call the Information Centre on freecall 1800 061 963.
Open your unit in Learnline and navigate to ‘Staff Information’ to view contact details of your lecturer/s.
How do I submit my assignments through Learnline?
- Find the assessment item you wish to complete. Online submission is indicated by the >> View/Complete Assignment link
- Click on the >> View/Complete Assignment link. This is where you submit your assignment
- Write in any comments for your lecturer. Don't forget to attach a cover sheet
- Click on ‘Browse’ to attach your file. Once located click ‘Open’ and the file name will appear in the ‘File to Attach’ box
- You may now click on ‘Save’ or ‘Submit’. Only click ‘Submit’ once you are certain the assignment is complete.
Once your assignment is submitted you cannot go back and make changes to it. Therefore if you are not ready for your lecturer/tutor to review you assignment use the ‘Save’ button.
Accepts files in Microsoft Word (doc), TXT, RTF, HTML or PDF formats only. Please do not upload files in any other formats, including JPEG or ZIP.
If you make a mistake (i.e. submit the wrong essay), you will need to email your lecturer to advise. The lecturer will be able to reset the system, and allow you to re-submit.
For more information, visit www.learnline.cdu.edu.au/quicktutes.html.
How do I check my grades in Learnline?
Go to My Grades (in ‘Course Tools’). This gives an overview of all the assessment items relating to your unit.
On the My Grades page, you will see a table listing each assignment along with the date, your grade, the possible points and the class average for the assignment. If your lecturer uses Blackboard's weighting features, you may also see the weight listed for each assignment.
- Items which have been submitted but not yet graded will be marked with an exclamation mark
- A dash indicates that either your work has not been graded or that you have not yet submitted your work.
Please note that Learnline is not the official resulting area for Charles Darwin University. Results displayed in Learnline are not final. After the central examination period, results need to be endorsed and approved by the relevant faculty. The faculty then advises Student Services to release final results to students no later than 18 days after the last examination. For grade release dates refer to www.cdu.edu.au/studentnet/calendar.html#8.
I tried to submit an assignment and I am not sure if it worked. How do I find out?
Go to My Grades (in ‘Course Tools’). This gives an overview of all the assessment items relating to your unit. If your assignment has been successfully submitted, and is awaiting marking, you will see an exclamation mark (!) in the Grade column.
If the padlock (In Progress) icon appears this usually indicates that the assignment/test/quiz has not been submitted. Check that you have submitted (and not just saved) your submission.

I have changed my enrolment, when will I see my updated units in Learnline?
When your enrolment is processed the information refreshes overnight on the Learnline system and therefore should show the next day after the enrolment was entered onto the system. If that does not happen contact Library and Information Access on 08 8946 6483 or email bbsupport@cdu.edu.au.
How can I have another go at an assignment?
