Security phones
A number of buildings have direct security access phones. Lift the handset and the phone will automatically contact security. These are easily identifiable under red and white signage - you should get to know where these phones are in your building.
If you do not think that a security escort is necessary, there are 'corridors of light' walkways, which are strategically placed around the campus and run from all the main buildings to the car parks.
Personal safety and security
- Never leave your wallet, bag or purse or other items of property unsecured and unattended
- Only carry sufficient cash for your immediate needs
- Clearly marking your property leaves no doubt to ownership (especially the text books you need for study)
- Never carry your Personal Identification Number with your credit cards - never tell anyone, including a bank representative, what your PIN is
- Do not put your bag or purse on the floor when in a public toilet cubicle
- Hide any valuables inside your vehicle, so they cannot be easily seen
- Avoid lonely or gloomy places, especially at night - walk with a friend or stay with a crowd
- Be alert and walk purposefully - confidence deters attackers
- Be wary of strangers, on foot or in cars asking directions - it is better to be rude than in trouble
- If someone follows you, change direction and go to a place where there are other people
- Respect your intuition - do not allow rationality to over-ride your 'sixth-sense' - it could protect you
Bicycle safety and security
Bicycles on campus should be secured to designated bike racks using a good quality 'U' or 'D' lock. Security strongly advise the use of two locks, one being a 'U' or 'D' and the other strengthened solid steel lock with plastic coated overlay. This may prove expensive but it is ultimately cheaper than a new bicycle.
Bicycles must not be attached to posts or railings. Any bicycle found in an area other than a designated Bike Rack may be 'clamped' by Security. You must then contact Security to negotiate release of the bicycle.
Please take note of the following regarding bikes on campus.
- Bicycles are not to be ridden on covered walkways
- Where there is a bicycle and pedestrian-shared pathway, the pedestrian always has right of way
- Bicycles are not to be ridden on pathways on university grounds at a speed greater than walking pace
- Bicycles shall utilise the ring roads of the university where possible to reach their destination point and park bicycles at the nearest parking rack
- Riding under the breezeway of Buildings 28 and 29 is strictly prohibited
