Student Guide 2008
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Student Guide 2008
Deferment and change of enrolment
Note: Postgraduate students are not allowed to defer a course.
Students who receive an offer for a place in Semester 2, 2008 or Summer Semester are not allowed to defer a course.
Students enrolled in BOT-Occupational Therapy and BPHAR-Pharmacy are not allowed to defer a course.
Students who receive an offer for a place in Semester 1, 2008 may choose to postpone/defer starting the course for up to 12 months.
You will require your student Identification Number (student ID) to process your enrolment. Your student number was included in your enrolment pack. It is a six digit number. Your student number should be quoted on all correspondence with the University. If you have been allocated more than one student number please advise the Information Centre staff immediately.
If you would like to defer your study for 12 months, i.e. keep your place until the following year, 2009, you should notify SATAC. Information on how to do this is available at www.satac.edu.au.
If you would like to defer your study for six months, i.e. keep your place until Semester 2, 2008, you should contact the Information Centre to determine if your course allows mid-year entry. If it does then you must accept your offer with SATAC and enrol in Semester 2, 2008 by following the recommended study plan.

What is a change of enrolment?
A change of enrolment can include one or more of the following actions:
- Add and/or substitute a unit
- Complete cancellation of a course
- Leave of absence
- Course transfer
- Application for exemption (credit transfer)
- Withdrawal from units
How do I change my enrolment?
You must be enrolled in 2008 before being able to make any changes to your enrolments. Deadlines by when you can add units for relevant semesters are in Date table 1, in this guide. This should not be confused with the last day to withdraw from a unit – that is always the census date for that semester (Date table 2).
You may submit your change either:
- Online using My Student Info
- Completing the relevant form
- In writing
- By fax
- E: student.admin@cdu.edu.au
If you choose to contact Student Services via any of these methods, you need to provide us with at least three documents that identify you as the person sending the request. These include: student ID, date of birth, and postal address. Please ensure you provide us with your most current postal address, phone number and email address, so we can contact you should there be a query.
Forms listed below are available from www.cdu.edu.au/studentnet/adminforms.html.

Complete cancellation of course (withdrawal from a course) HE104
If you want to completely cancel your course of study, you may benefit from discussing your situation before you cancel your enrolment. The Information Centre or Academic Liaison Unit can provide advice on the most appropriate person to talk to. Often an alternative solution other than complete cancellation can be found. If you withdraw from all units within the relevant semester/teaching period or academic year, your enrolment will become ‘inactive’ in that course unless you make a formal request for leave of absence (intermission) for that semester/teaching period or academic year.
Non-attendance at classes does not automatically cancel your enrolment, nor does it cancel your HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP debts.
Leave of absence (intermission) HE104
Leave of absence refers to the process by which a student who has been enrolled in a particular course and completed at least one unit towards the course they have applied for and is granted permission to take leave from his/her studies within that course for up to one year.
Some benefit may be gained from discussing your situation. The Information Centre or Academic Liaison Unit can provide advice on the most appropriate person to talk to.
Students who do not advise the University of their intention to return to their course of study by the relevant census dates, are considered lapsed from the course. For example, if you do not return your 2008 Higher Education Enrolment form, and do not submit a form seeking a formal leave of absence, your activity in the course will be lapsed before the next admission period, e.g. around August each year. All lapsed students will be required to re-apply for admission through the South Australian Tertiary Admission Centre (SATAC) at the next available admission period.
Course transfer HE103
A course transfer is the process whereby a student who is currently enrolled at CDU seeks to transfer to a different/new course, at the same or lower level. This is possible only when there are places available in the course. Please note that a course transfer is not available in 2008 into Bachelor of Pharmacy or Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning. There are three distinct course transfers, e.g.:
- Change of award outcome (Bachelor of Arts to Bachelor of Science);
- Change from single to double degree (Bachelor of Arts to Bachelor of Arts /Bachelor of Science);
- Change to the newest course version (BA98 to BA22). Admission requirements for the new course need to be met by the student.
Pre-1997 and pre-2005 students wishing to transfer to a course at a lower level should note that they may lose their pre-1997/2005-status, and should note that they will be treated as 2008 students, and under HESA 2003 will be charged applicable fees.
The process of course transfer is not to be used for students who are seeking to study a course at a higher level than the course they are enrolled in. These students must complete an application for admission via www.satac.edu.au and selection takes place during the University’s offer rounds through SATAC.
Pre-1997 and pre-2005 students are encouraged to contact the Information Centre to ensure that their current fee status is not affected.
Special conditions
Students should have normally completed at least 40 credit points in their current course of study, before they may be permitted to seek a transfer to a new course of study.
This does not apply to students who are seeking a course transfer to the newest version of the course; in this case, evidence of at least 10 credit points of successful study is requires. Please see the next table for course transfers.
Students who are not currently enrolled, and whose status is either inactive or lapsed, are not permitted to use the course transfer process. These students are encouraged to submit an application for admission for the proposed course of study through SATAC.
Course transfers are only allowable before Summer Semester and Semester 1 or 2. Refunds are not available for withdrawals after the relevant census date. Refunds are not automatic and must be applied for. If a refund is approved, a cheque will be sent within 28 days.
International students who hold a student visa are required to maintain a full-time enrolment.
AUSTUDY/ABSTUDY - It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that eligibility for Austudy/Abstudy is not affected if you change your enrolment in any way.
Your transfer must be authorised for the new course that you are transferring to. If you have completed any units that may be relevant to your new course, your course co ordinator will arrange for the credit transfer to be granted at the time of the course transfer being processed.

Exemptions for previous study
Exemptions (credit transfer) from one or more units in your current course may be applied for on the basis of completed relevant studies undertaken previously. To apply for exemption you will need to complete an HE113 Application for Exemption available from the Information Centre. This process is not available on My Student Info.
Your completed form, together with attached documentary evidence to support your request for exemption/credit transfer, should be submitted directly to the Information Centre either in person or by mail in the first six months of your commencement of a course. Requests without documentary evidence will not be processed and will be returned to students.
