Support Desk

The Support Desk is your first point of contact for assistance with computers, the Internet, telephones, printers, and associated information technology equipment and services. You can contact the Support Desk if you have any problems with the computers, software or passwords:

General access computers are available at ITMS and the campus libraries at Casuarina and Palmerston for the purpose of burning your student files and data to CDs.

ITMS operates between the hours of 7.30am - 6.00pm Monday to Friday. The ITMS Support Desk will be available for urgent call-out support, though this phone support is restricted to major IT faults Monday to Friday 6.00am - 9.00pm and 8.00am - 4.00pm on weekends and public holidays.

Student computer account

Your computer account gives you email access and access to the web with an initial free 400 Mb of download capacity valid for one year (extra megabytes can be purchased for $10 per block of 400 Mb through the cashier). Your account also provides you with a password to allow you access to the computer workstations in the computer laboratories.

Computer facilities

Computer laboratories are available for student use on level 3 Orange 1 at Casuarina campus, building C at Palmerston and Alice Springs campuses. The laboratories are open on a weekday basis between 7.00am and 1.00am at Casuarina, 7.00am and 11.00pm at Palmerston campus and varied hours at Alice Springs campus. Your student card should automatically give you after hour’s access to computer labs. If you have any problems, simply take your student card to the enquiries counter in the Information Centre and someone will help you. For access at Alice Springs, please contact the Alice Springs Information Centre staff. Students should be aware that they could be charged under the Student Conduct By-Laws if they are found to be misusing computers and, in particular, accessing pornographic material or sending emails which contain racist, sexist or other comments which contravene Federal or Territory Equal Opportunity legislation.

LearnLink/Academic support

CDU LearnLink is a one-stop-shop for students seeking academic support. The programs of LearnLink aim to give students the skills, literacy and confidence to progress within the education system and/or the job market in general or to settle in the Northern Territory community. There is a strong emphasis on providing students with a supportive environment in order that the significant transition many of them are making into the world of education is successful. Study skills assistance

The development of skills in areas such as time management, essay writing, understanding academic expectations and examination preparation is available through LearnLink. The Study Skills Facilitator provides individual information sessions and group workshops on study-related topics throughout the year. An interactive website is also available to assist students to develop their own study skills at www.learnline.cdu.edu.au/studyskills.

Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)

The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) has been developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to assess a range of competencies commonly considered important for success in tertiary study. Find out more >>

Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS)

If you are an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student and you need extra help with your studies, the Indigenous Academic Support Team is there to help you adapt to the study environment, meet the academic requirements of your course, find a tutor if you need one or just answer any questions you might have even if you are in a remote area. Computer lab and student common room

A computer lab and student common room are available for Indigenous students studying at the Casuarina campus, which is part of the School of Australian Indigenous Knowledge Systems. There is also an Indigenous Students Association, which publishes a monthly Indigenous students newsletter. For more details:

Library and learning precinct

The CDU library operates at Casuarina, Palmerston and Alice Springs campuses. Orientation sessions for new students are offered at the beginning of semesters 1 and 2. Please note that library opening hours may vary between campuses and during semester breaks.

Computers are available for study and research purposes at all campus libraries. The computers are imaged by ITMS and have the same software as those in the computer labs. They operate on the student network and require a computer account to be able to log in. Casuarina and Palmerston libraries are wireless-enabled and both offer a tablet PC lending service - more details are available at www.cdu.edu.au/library/learningprecinct.

Library staff provide assistance for basic use of programs such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint. For more advanced use of applications or other information requirements staff are able to direct students to reference materials or online tutorials. Assistance is also provided for processes such as printing, burning a CD or scanning images.

Photocopying, printing and print account quota

Photocopiers are available for student use in the libraries at all campuses. Each student gets a print account, which is linked to their student ID and their student computer account. There is a ‘Print Start’ quota credited to each enrolled student’s print account which enables every student a limited account of free printing and copying. Uniprint Express provides printing and photocopying facilities at the Casuarina and Palmerston campuses using your CDU student card to access a rechargeable account. Casual photocopy cards can also be purchased at either campus. Students may purchase additional credits via cash recharging units or EFTPOS terminals in the libraries. Uniprint Express is available in Casuarina Library, Palmerston Library, Casuarina Computing Labs, Orange 1, level 3, Palmerston Computing Lab PA.1, Palmerston Computing Lab PB.1, Palmerston Computing Lab PC.2 and Education, Health and Science and IT computing labs.

Support available from Support and Equity Services

Counselling

If you are experiencing difficulties that affect your academic studies and seek to achieve a more balanced life, then personal counselling enables you to improve individual well-being.

The Student Facilitator, counselling is located in Support and Equity Services and is available by appointment to all students wanting to discuss any issues causing them concern in their academic and/or personal life.

Disability support

The Student Facilitator, disabilities is the first point of contact for students with a disability attending CDU. Our service facilitates access to all services of CDU for students with a disability; this includes making reasonable adjustment to address the effects of the disability on the student’s ability to undertake their study.

International student support

The Student Facilitator, international support provides international students with information and support upon arrival at the University and assists with the resolution of concerns encountered during the study time and in preparation for their return home.

Equity - information, assistance and support

It is the objective of CDU to ensure the absence of all forms of discrimination and harassment based on gender, marital status, race, age, disability or sexual preference in relation to all facets of student participation at the University. Support and Equity Services provides assistance to students who believe this may be occurring by discussing and clarifying the situation and exploring with students their rights, responsibilities and options to resolve the matter.

Complaint resolution

Support and information is available through Support and Equity Services to resolve grievances and complaints either with other students, University staff or University administrative or academic complaints and appeals. To assist students in the resolution of complaints and appeals the University has developed a student administrative complaints review process, a student academic complaint and appeals process and conciliation/grievance procedures for complaints about discrimination and harassment. Information about these processes is available through Support and Equity Services. Support for complaint resolution is available from the Senior Advisor.

Student accommodation and loans

The Student Facilitator, reception maintains and updates information for students seeking accommodation, part-time employment, and information and application forms for emergency student loans.
