Apprenticeships and traineeships
Australian Apprenticeships
An Australian Apprenticeship combines practical work with structured training to give you nationally recognised qualifications and real-life experience.
There is no age limit and you have a degree of control over how long your course of study will take.
While traditional apprenticeships took two to three years to complete and traineeships one or two years, Australian Apprenticeships are competency based so if you master the skills you need quickly, you may complete the course sooner than you had expected.
Charles Darwin University offers training for a wide range of Australian Apprenticeships. These include the traditional trades such as plumbing, cooking, carpentry and engineering, as well as new areas of study, such as community services, business administration, sport and recreation, and animal studies.

What do I have to do to become a Australian Apprentice?
To become a Australian Apprentice, you must:
- Be employed
- Have signed a training agreement with your employer
- Have the training agreement registered with the Australian Apprenticeship Centre
Once the training agreement is registered, the NAC advises the University and the University contacts the student and employer. The student then enrols in a Charles Darwin University course in the same way as any other VET student.
For more information, visit the Skills for the Future website. You can also get a copy of the Code of Good Practice from a Australian Apprenticeships Centre, which explains what is involved in entering into a training agreement.
