During this course, you will learn about play therapy—a suite of approaches and techniques that you can apply in all settings and cultures to enhance the wellbeing of other people. Unlike most other approaches, play therapy has been scientifically demonstrated to help even individuals whose language skills are limited, including children or adolescents with developmental delays.

After completing the course, you will be able to apply play therapy in diverse settings, from schools to remote communities. You can utilize these approaches to help all children, including children who demonstrate behavioural problems, distress, trauma, language difficulties, and other challenges. Furthermore, you will also develop the capacity to help parents and teachers apply many of these approaches and techniques to improve the wellbeing and behaviour of their own children.

Finally, the course imparts the research skills you need to conduct research into this field and to extend knowledge on play therapy.

Professional recognition

Completion of the course will enable individuals to apply for membership of the Australasia Pacific Play Therapy Association.

Admission requirements

Successful completion of a recognised Bachelor degree or equivalent in the field of education, medicine, nursing, allied health, psychology or social work. All applicants must be registered with the relevant professional body in the field of their completed degree.

Additional admission requirements

In addition to completing your application through SATAC, you will be required to submit a supporting statement that outlines your reasons for wanting to study play therapy.

The supporting statement must be no longer than one page and should demonstrate:

  • Why you want to study play therapy; and
  • Why you should be selected for entry into the Master of Play Therapy at Charles Darwin University.

Supporting statements should be emailed directly to playtherapy@cdu.edu.au.

Applicants who meet the entry requirements stated above, will be contacted by Charles Darwin University to attend an interview. The interview may be held in person or by Skype.

Commonwealth Supported places are available in this course to students who meet one of the following residency requirements: (a) Australian Citizenship; (b) a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident visa holder who will be resident within Australia for the duration of the unit.

Course structure

Five core units will deepen students' knowledge of the development of play over childhood and across cultures. Studies will then introduce play therapy and specifically focus on how play can be used in contexts to help children managing stressful situations, such as medical procedures, and how play can be used therapeutically to facilitate psychological healing and social-emotional well-being.

Students will also complete two units of supervised practice and students can choose 3 electives that will help deepen and broaden their knowledge of children's health and cultural contexts to enable the application of play therapies in diverse cultural and developmental contexts. Students will also select two research methods units and undertake a thesis in their second year of study.

A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 160 credit points (cp) as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless indicated.
