To apply to study abroad at Charles Darwin University you will need to:

Choose an application pathway

You may choose to apply directly to Charles Darwin University, through an existing program at your home institution or through agencies or established partner links. Some agencies include IDP and Australian Education Centres (browse our Study Abroad Agencies page for more information). These agencies assist students with application, fee transfer, visa and grade/credit interpretation.

To apply directly to Charles Darwin University download the International Student Application Form for Study Abroad/Exchange (.pdf, 66KB), complete and fax or mail back to the address listed on the form.

Application steps

  1. Apply through your university, following their procedures for application.
  2. Following successful selection through your university, complete the Charles Darwin University International Student Application Form for Study Abroad/Exchange (.pdf, 66KB).
  3. Submit form to Charles Darwin University (by mail or fax) or agency. Choose up to eight units and write the name and unit codes. Identify approved subjects that hold alternative interest. A copy of your current academic record must be included with your application for admission.
    • 1 May for the second semester of the same year (July-November)
    • 1 September for the first semester of the following year (February-June)
      (you may submit after this date but you may have problems in organising your visa on time)
  4. You will receive an acknowledgment of receipt of application, usually within two weeks.
  5. CDU will assess your application and approve a maximum of 5 units for study each semester. (Note: At CDU 4 units is a full time load for a semester.) If you want to take more than 5 units you will be liable for the tuition costs of units in excess of 5 units per semester.
  6. The university issues a Letter of Offer, which includes details about payment of fees, (depending on the application pathway, whether through home university exchange or an approved program, direct enrolment, agency, etc.) and the subject (course) approval.
  7. Student accepts offer by signing and returning the Terms of Agreement and paying the compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover.
  8. The university confirms pre-approved subject (course) selection.
  9. The university issues the electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE) letter needed to obtain visa.
  10. Student applies for a student visa.
  11. Student confirms arrival dates, time and flights to allow the university to arrange a complimentary airport pickup.
