Professional Development Calendar

This calendar will change during 2008. Please check back here for updates to the Professional Development Program. Please visit the overview page for an explanation of the types of PD available.

Registration

Registration is essential for all sessions and staff are advised to register early to avoid disappointment. Staff who are subsequently unable to attend events are requested to notify Lida Yuan at least two days in advance of the session. If we haven’t had at least 6 staff members sign on for a session 24 hours before a session is due to start, you will be advised by email of the next available session time. Minimum numbers apply for most workshops, however individual consultations with EDU staff are available by negotiation. Please contact your EDU representative if you have any concerns or need help straight away.

Please tick the checkboxes on the right for the events you would like to attend. At the bottom of this page please fill out your details and submit this online form to register for our professional development workshops.

Writing for Educational Journal Publication Workshop- Dr Mary Jane Mahony

All staff and post-graduate students welcome to this next TLDG Friday lunchtime seminar.

Do you have something to report about teaching and learning in the distance education/online learning context? Perhaps it’s a conference paper which could turn into a journal article, or perhaps something else which might be worth reporting? Or perhaps you are new to university life and haven’t yet thought about what might be required to publish in the field of education.

During this one-hour workshop Dr Mahony will overview the pathway to publication and present some strategies, tips and traps. She will use distance and online education as the demonstration field.

Participants are encouraged to bring a piece of work or data with potential for publication with them to be used as part of a brief workshop activity.

Dr Mahony is a member of the editorial board for the internationally recognised peer-reviewed journal Distance Education. She is currently visiting the Education Development Unit.

Feel free to bring you own lunch along. There’s no need to register.

New features in Learnline: Grade Centre, Early Warning System workshop

This workshop will focus on the new Grade Centre that replaces the former Grade Book and a new feature called the Early Warning system. The first part of this workshop will cover how to set up the Grade Centre, learn how to use some of the features and modify the display options. We can then go on to explore how to best work with grades to meet your individual needs. The Early Warning System is a brand new feature to Learnline that allows you to identify those students that may need more help with an area of the course. This is a great tool to assist with student retention as intervention early on can be all that’s needed to keep a student on track.

Using Learnline to promote communication with and between your students

This workshop will focus on tools within Learnline that assist lecturers to communicate with students, and encourage students to interact with each other such as email, announcements, discussion boards and Wimba voice tools that enable you to record voice messages, podcast audio files, set up voice based discussions and presentations with voice-over. (This workshop will not include how to use the Wimba live classroom). The workshop will provide an overview on the key principles for the effective design and use of these communication tools which includes suggestions for how these tools should be used, how to set up effective discussion tasks, how to encourage participation, techniques in moderation and how to assess online discussions. Participants will look at the features of these tools and how to apply these principles to their teaching and learning context. You will be given access to a Playground site on the practice server where you can see these features in action and test out the new features. As we move through some activities we will also review the performance dashboard which helps you to determine which areas of Learnline students have accessed.

What to bring: If you have a set of headphones with a microphone please bring it along with you, we have limited numbers of these!!
