Teaching Portfolios
Traditionally academics receive recognition and reward for teaching through the successful application for promotion, awards and grant funding. TLDG is engaged in a project to support academics in the ongoing collection of evidence for the development of applications and PDRS documents.
By providing guidelines on documenting evidence of teaching enhancement and development through the use of teaching portfolios, and linking those portfolios to University recognition and reward structures, the University seeks to encourage, motivate and reward academics who are excellent teachers.
The process of building a portfolio often leads to reflection about teaching with consequent improvements in practice. The evidence required for a teaching portfolio is invaluable in the development of annual review documentation and applications for grants, citations, awards, and fellowships as well as for study leave and promotion.
Project stages
The teaching portfolio project has several stages.
Stage 1 (January 2008 – May 2008)
In Stage 1 TLDG worked collaboratively with Heads of Schools and their staff to develop the Teaching Professional Develpment Matrix Guidelines (PDF file 18k) for teaching development activities across the a-e academic career levels. This work has comprised several meetings with each Head of School and the Faculty Deans, a meeting with each School, and follow up work with representatives of each School.
Stage 2 (August – December 2008)
In Stage 2 TLDG will work collaboratively with School representatives to develop examples of what constitutes evidence for each box in the matrix developed in stage 1.
Stage 3 (May – December 2008)
In Stage 3 TLDG will work to link the matrix developed in stage 1 to related University processes such as the PDRS, study leave, T&L award applications, promotions etc.
Stage 4 (February 2009 – June 2009)
In Stage 4 TLDG will implement professional development opportunities for staff and supervisors about the ways in which teaching portfolios can be developed and used in processes such PDRS, study leave, T&L award applications, promotions etc.
Stage 5 (February – June 2009)
In Stage 5 TLDG will work collaboratively with Division regional managers and their staff to develop the guidelines for teaching development activities across the I - IV academic career levels.
