Your new way around Casuarina campus
In its short history, the University has experienced sustained growth: physically, in terms of
academic disciplines, and in its connections with the Northern Territory community. Each
year more than 10% of the NT population over the age of 14 enrols in a course.
Many more Territorians come onto University campuses for collaborations, events, and to
use the wide ranging, high quality facilities.
To support this growth and community engagement, the University has been reconsidering how to improve accessibility to, and navigation around, its campuses. A major outcome of this is the Wayfinding project at Casuarina campus.
Wayfinding is a complete redesign of signage incorporating traffic, pedestrian and landscape facilities across campus into one readily comprehensible system.
Wayfinding includes:
- A standard signage system
- Precinct colours
- Building names and building identification
- Pedestrian map directory signs
- Vehicle map directory signs
- Pedestrian direction signs
- Car park names and signage
Standard signage system
Each sign will appear to be part of the same signage system, with the use of clear text and directional arrows formed by colour-coding and the repetitive use of the same visual clues.
Precinct colours
Precinct areas are identified by colours. Colours have no symbolic value, are discrete, readily identifiable and contrast clearly with adjoining precinct colours. The use of colours as the defining characteristics of precincts is logical and beneficial in a number of ways. It is non-verbal, making it readily understandable across a broad range of demographic and language types.
Implementation
1. Renumbering of buildings
The contractor will provide temporary directional and information signage during the changeover period.
2. Changing internal room numbering
All rooms currently numbered will be changed during the changeover period to the new system, which will only show building level and room identification number (as opposed to building number, level and room number).
Changeover of signage commenced in March 2008. Throughout the implementation, information will be available on telephone 8946 6500 and at the Information Centre, Casuarina campus.
