Who is Valerie Asche?

When Valerie Asche moved up to Darwin in 1986 she took up a position as senior research fellow at the recently formed Menzies School of Health Research.

Menzies was soon recognized for its ground-breaking research into tropical health. Valerie Asche worked at Menzies from 1986-1994 under Director John Matthews. Menzies was connected to The University of Sydney until 2003, when it became an entity of Charles Darwin University (CDU). 

Valerie Asche's connection with the Territory's University began when her husband, The Hon Austin Asche, became the chairman of the Council of the University College of NT and then the inaugural Chancellor of Northern Territory University (NTU)in 1989. Over the next 25 years she has "beaten a path" to the University, attending a great many events in association with her husband's role.

ValerieAsche also set up the then new University's distaff group, providing graduation gowns for the graduation ceremonies. As President of the Women's Graduate Association of the NT she was also involved with various scholarships that were provided to NTU and CDU students. She has been Chairman of TOP FM - the University based radio station.

In 2007 her distinguished career in microbiology teaching and research was recognised with an Honorary Doctorate from CDU.
