2023 Northern Territory Flood Appeal

Picture of flooded Gurindji Country

A big thank you to those of you who generously supported the recent CDU Flood Appeal for the Big Rivers Region. The university matched staff donations and raised a total of $8,990, which was split evenly between the two well-established, community-led organisations who are on the ground directly supporting community: Gurindji Aboriginal Corporation and Karungkarni Art and Culture Centre.

The recent floods on Gurindji Country have caused immense damage and devastation to Kalkarindji,

Daguragu and surrounding communities. Many families have lost their homes and belongings, and are in urgent need of assistance.

With the evacuation of 700 people from Daguragu, Kalkarindji, Pigeon Hole and other nearby communities to the Centre for National Resilience at Howard Springs outside of Darwin, there are many immediate and urgent needs to attend to. Then, when the water recedes, the immensely heartbreaking work of cleaning up and rebuilding will begin.

The impacts of this major disaster will be felt by many people  - families, Elders, and children  - well into the future.

Donations received by CDU will be shared between two reputable organisations who work directly with the affected communities and have created appeals specifically to support the Gurindji Country flood victims.

Freedom Day Festival have created an appeal that is administered by the Gurundji Aboriginal Corporation (GAC). The GAC will ensure that donations are distributed according to local community requirements and the wishes of the people in need.

Karungkarni Art and Cultural Aboriginal Corporation has strong links to Kalkarindji/Daguragu community Elders and youth. Their appeal will engage Gurindji workers to undertake the immense clean up and restoration of the art centre which is a central hub of cultural life in the region. CDU has a long and ongoing partnership with the art centre, particularly through First Nations Leadership and Engagement and the CDU Art Collection and Art Gallery.
