"We weren't just a sea of faces..."

Jasmine Jan

With the Top End Dry Season just around the corner, at the Territory Wildlife Park CDU alumni Jasmine Jan is running an Artists-In-the Park program for the third successive year.

Jasmine, who graduated from CDU with a Bachelor of Science in 1994 in its former incarnation, the Northern Territory University, said the purpose of the program is to make accessible to artists amazing natural resources for inspiration.

“I am very passionate about supporting and growing the artistic community in the Top End,” said Jasmine. “It is what makes our community so much richer.”

A Darwin local, Jasmine, who originally started her undergraduate degree in Melbourne but soon found herself pining for Darwin’s balmy weather and laidback lifestyle.

While studying she undertook a traineeship in the Natural Sciences department of Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. During this time she was also lucky to study in the USA with the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators an opportunity funded by The Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Trust.

“Darwin is laidback, the Casuarina campus is great. You don’t have to deal with big city issues of traffic, pollution and parking. I enjoyed the small classes,  we developed close relationships with our lecturers. We weren’t just a sea of faces.”
