Curator, CDU Art Collection and Art Gallery

The Curator, CDU Art Collection and Art Gallery is Dr Joanna Barrkman (PhD, BA, Grad Dip. Grad Cert, MA, PhD.). Joanna formerly worked as Senior Curator, Southeast Asia and Pacific Arts at the Fowler Museum at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). She curated Aboriginal Screen-Printed Textiles from Australia's Top End - exhibited at the Fowler Museum in 2021 - and edited the eponymous publication published as Volume 16 in the Fowler Museum Textile Series.

Prior to joining the staff at CDU in 2015, she previously held the position of Senior Curator Art of Southeast Asian Art and Material Culture at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (2003-2012). Joanna also worked at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra in the Asian Curatorial team (2013-14). She has curated exhibitions in Australia, Indonesia, USA and Timor-Leste. She co–curated the exhibition Textiles of Timor: island in a Woven Sea at Fowler Museum, Los Angles, USA and co-edited the eponymous publication in 2014 as Volume 13 of the Fowler Museum Textile Series.

Joanna's doctoral thesis, undertaken at the Australian National University, examined the significance of an ethnographic collection of Makasae and Naueti cultural material acquired from Baguia in Portuguese Timor during 1935, which is part of the collection of the Museum der Kulturen, Basel, Switzerland. With Makassae and Naueti community members, Joanna explored the contemporary significance of this collection through its digital 'return', following decades of social unrest and cultural dislocation in modern day Timor-Leste.
