CRSF1140 - Maintain Fields of Study

Purpose To enable the creation and maintenance of institution-defined Field of Study and Research Codes.

Structure Block Field of Study
 

This form is used to record and maintain the set of institution-defined Fields of Study for the courses offered by the institution. These may be mapped to the Government Fields of Education (defined in STAF112J) that are reported to the government as element 463. Fields of Study may be recorded for a candidature in RESF3211, for a unit set in CRSF4240 or for a Course Version in CRSF1260. Government reporting for element 463 in HE Course Admissions data group may source data from these locations. Refer to HE Course Admissions for more details.

To allow for a more detailed classification of Fields of study at the institution level, more than one institution-defined Field of Study code can be mapped to the same Government Field of Education code

 

The Field of Study block contains:

  • Field of Study
  • Description
  • Govt Field of Education
  • Govt Field of Study
  • Closed check box

 

 

To create a new field of study or research code using the Maintain Fields of Study form:

  • Enter Insert Mode
  • Enter the desired name (or code) of the field of study or research code in the Field of Study field of a blank record
  • Enter a meaningful description for the field of study/research code in the Description field
  • Select the appropriate Govt Field of Study/Research Code from the list of values (or key a valid value)
  • Save 

Rules/Notes:

New institution-defined Field of Study codes should be mapped to Govt Field of Education codes.

A field of study/research code cannot be mapped to a CLOSED Government field of study/research code. 

Government Field of Eductaion value must be 4 digits in length.

 

To delete a field of study or research code using the Maintain Fields of Study form:

  • Find the record to be deleted
  • Locate the cursor in the record to be deleted 
  • Delete record
  • Save 

Rules/Notes: 

If a field of study or research code has been used in the definition of a course, it cannot be deleted. It can be closed, preventing any further use, by selecting the Closed check box.

A CLOSED field of study/research code cannot be re-opened if the Government code to which it is mapped is CLOSED. 

To modify a field of study or research code using the Maintain Fields of Study form:

  • Find the record to be modified
  • Modify the record as required
  • Save 

Rules/Notes: 

If a field of study/research code has been used in the definition of a course, only the description can be modified. This is not recommended unless the change in description is minor and does not affect the meaning of the description. A new field of study/research code should normally be created.

A field of study/research code can be closed, preventing any further use, by selecting the Closed check box.
