This form enables users to capture the details of industry engagement included as part of a student's candidature. This engagement data is captured to assist in reporting the following codes) for Element 593 (Higher degree by research end–user engagement code) :
This form is accessed via the Research Candidature Details (RESF3211) form. |
Note: If a student’s Industry Engagement record contains a ‘Research End-User Org Unit’ where the Organisational Unit (ORGF0141) is mapped to an Organisation Type (ORGF0113) which has the End-User Internship indicator set to Y, this association denotes the student is undertaking a research internship with a research end-user.
Period of Internship
If a student undertakes an internship with a research end-user for a period of at least 30 days or greater, then code 02 will be reported; if for less than thirty days, code 06 is reported.
The period of an Internship is calculated using the date span(s) for Engagement with a Research End User* and the 'Industry Attendance Days' -' the Industry Attendance Days' being the number of days (or part there of) per week that the student is engaged.
e.g. Industry Start Date = 02/04/2018 and End Date = 30/06/2018, Industry Attendance Days = 2
Time Span of Internship = 90 days, which equals 90/7 =
12.86 weeks
Period of Internship = 12.86
x 2 = 25.71days
For further examples of the calculation of the Industry Engagement Period and the derivation of the Higher Degree by Research End-User Engagement Code, refer to Higher Degree by Research EndUser Engagement Code - Examples.

HEIMS Engagement Type definitions
INTERNSHIP- Research internship is defined as a temporary position with a research end‑user where a student has undertaken research and development (R&D) related to their higher degree by research (HDR). A research internship must be for a period of at least 30 days, can be either paid or unpaid, and can form part of the enrolment or be undertaken during an HDR period of suspension.
FUNDED - Jointly funded or fully funded by a research end–user is where a research end‑user contributes financially to the cost of an HDR student's course of study or to other costs borne by the student during their study (such as a stipend for general living costs). The arrangement must be awarded specifically in relation to an HDR student rather than a general HEP research project that a student may be involved with.
TRAINING - Formal training on end‑user engagement is defined as any formal training recognised by the HEP that focusses on preparing a student for work with a research end‑user. This includes intellectual property, management/leadership, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and research commercialisation. Training can be administered by a research end‑user organisation or by the HEP.
OTHER - Other commercialisation and engagement activities is defined as an arrangement with a research end‑user that enables experiential learning related to the student's HDR. This includes practicums or performances, R&D consultancy work, R&D commercialisation work, entrepreneurship, community engagement/outreach, and research extension work either with or for a research end‑user.
These activities can be paid or unpaid, and no minimum amount of learning days applies. The activities exclude research internships unless they are shorter than 30 days and exclude joint funding arrangements.
