University of Virginia delegation visits CDU Casuarina campus, showcasing global collaboration and shared learning

June 2026 edition
UOV Visit

CDU welcomed a delegation from the University of Virginia (UOV), USA to the Casuarina campus.

Organised by CDU Global Engagement team, the visit focused on the role of sport in international diplomacy, using basketball as a platform for cross-cultural exchange and community engagement.

The visit brought CDU and UOV students together to learn from academics and community partners about First Nations-led sport, Indigenous knowledge, youth leadership, and the role of sport in social change.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor First Nations Leadership, Professor Ruth Wallace and Associate Professor Tracy Woodroffe, alongside UOV representatives, Associate Professor Jack Hamilton and Dr Tina Mangieri hosted a panel discussion.

“The panel explored complex themes around national identity, history, and social responsibility, including how nations like Australia and the United States reconcile celebrated narratives of democracy and opportunity with histories of dispossession and inequality,” CDU Global Associate Director, Marissa Briston said.

“It was a fantastic exchange and strong step forward in building collaborative partnerships.”

Master of Social Work student and research assistant Ms Mengdie “Momo” Zhao presented research on the Hoops 4 Health program, demonstrating the positive impact of First Nations-led community sport initiative on the wellbeing, identity and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Territory.

“CDU Global Engagement extends its thanks to the panel speakers, Hoops for Health NT and the First Nations Leadership team for their contributions and supporting this enriching cross-cultural experience,” Ms Briston said.

The visit to CDU is one component of the delegation’s broader Australian “Game Changer”  program, which includes time in Darwin working closely with Hoops for Health NT, as well as visits to the Tiwi Islands and Alice Springs before returning to the USA.
