In 2017 the CDU VET Horticulture team commenced building a delivery plan for AHC20416 Certificate II Horticulture at Wurrumiyanga, Bathurst Island.

Students of varied ages (21-65) enrolled and started the training, with training delivered across the women’s centre, Wurrumiyanga, and at the Horticulture facility at CDU Casuarina campus.  Recently, four women completed their qualification, and attended the graduation ceremony at the Darwin Convention Centre.

Throughout their training, graduates learnt many practical projects across both centres, including vegetable production, irrigation, recognising plants, treating weeds, propagation, and tending to nursery plants.  The women were challenged, excited, and rewarded by engaging in the multifaceted delivery program.  Their accomplishments also extended beyond formal learning, as delivery across two training sites meant the group became more accustomed to travel, accommodation, and training on a large University campus.

This remarkable achievement required a big commitment from the women, who have extensive family responsibilities, and were supported by their families, the CDU VET Horticulture team and support staff, the Away From Base team, Tiwi Islands Training and Employment Board, the Learner Support team, and International House Accommodation.

Well done to our Graduates, and we look forward to celebrating with more graduates from Wurrumiyanga in horticulture next year.
