A Charles Darwin University Vocational Education and Training student has won an all expenses trip to the V8 Supercars in Bathurst next year as part of the prize for being named the Territory’s top automotive apprentice.

Trades team leader Jamie Finn said Automotive Refinish Technology (spray painting) apprentice David Eves was one of nine CDU students honoured at the Motor Traders Association awards in Darwin last week.

“Congratulations to all the winners, but especially to David, a talented and deserved winner of the major award,” Mr Finn said.

“David has long demonstrated a thirst for knowledge and skills relevant to his employer, Arafura Crash Repairs, and more broadly to the automotive industry.

“He has all but completed an apprenticeship in Automotive Refinishing Technology, his second apprenticeship, having qualified with a Certificate in Automotive Body Repair Technology (panel beater) in 2012.

“It has been a big year for David, who just two months ago represented the Territory at the national colour matching competition in Melbourne.”

Mr Finn congratulated the Motor Traders Association for conducting an auction in support of the suicide prevention work undertaken by Lifeline.

One of the items up for auction was the front door of a Ford V8 supercar that sustained damage in a race against an arch rival Holden driver.

Mr Finn said the item purchased by CDU would be displayed in the automotive workshop on Casuarina campus, as an icon for student aspiration.

“Given that David is skilled as both a spray painter and a panel beater, there is a strong connection, if not a touch of irony, in acquiring the door for the workshop.”

Other apprentices who won awards, and who are undertaking tertiary training with CDU are: Becki Kernich, Hugh Dwyer, Edge Bolton, Matthew Kemp, Hardeep Singh, Spencer Martin, Mitchell Bauer, and Bailey Doedee.
