2019 Top End Best Burger winners

The Top End’s Best Burgers have been decided. Twenty-one burgers were entered in the competition sponsored by CDU and Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

The winning burgers awarded in four categories were:

  • Traditional Beef Burger (Retail): Malones Butchery 
  • Traditional Beef Burger (Hospitality): COOL SPOT Café
  • Gourmet Beef Burger: Katherine Country Club
  • Gourmet Lamb Burger: Fannie Bay Gourmet Meats

The competition was run as part of the Meat Appreciation Industry Evening at Karawa Restaurant, CDU Palmerston campus on Wednesday 28 August.

CDU Lecturer/Workplace Assessor Culinary Arts Butchery, Rodney Sims said the objective was to provide Top End retailers with an opportunity to showcase what they do and to give them some support and ideas about value-adding through MLA.

“Long term we would like to join the National Sausage King Competition run by Australian Meat Industry Council so that our retailers are recognised not only in the Territory but also on the national stage," he said.

“It’s time to put ourselves on the map.”

The judges were Doug Piper, MLA Retail Business Manager and Corporate Butcher, along with CDU’s Bharat Desai, Head of School Tourism Hospitality, Robert Schwerdt, VET Team Leader Culinary Arts, and Chef Mathew Cook, VET Lecturer Culinary Arts.

Mr Piper also conducted a master class on the night, demonstrating innovative ideas for value-adding beef and lamb in the retail and hospitality sectors. CDU also showcased the “lambington”, a value-adding innovation by VET Lecturer Culinary Arts Chef Jason Wilkes.

“A big shout out to Carlyn, who does all our sausage and burger making,” said Russell Watego from Malone’s Butchery, winner of Best Traditional Beef Burger.

“Carlyn experiments every week and loves putting new things in the cabinet. The team is absolutely stoked about winning the comp.”

Likewise, Fannie Bay Gourmet Meats is proud of the team behind their Top End’s Best Lamb Burger win.

“We continually strive to provide our customers with something delicious and different,” owner Bronwyn Wilkins said.  

“We are looking forward to supplying more burger entries next year and will set our sights on the National Sausage King competition with some mouth-watering gourmet sausages as well.”
