Confucius Institute welcomes new students

By Leanne Miles

The Confucius Institute, jointly with the Office of International Services, has hosted a special event to welcome new Chinese students and staff to Casuarina campus.

The event brought together alumni, students and staff to offer support to new students and build relationships between the CDU and broader Chinese communities.

Jane Liu, who completed a Certificate in Hospitality in 2011, attended the event to share her experience with new students.

She said that after completing her Bachelor of Tourism and Hotel Management in China, she moved to Sydney to gain professional experience and improve her English.

“In Sydney my friends were Chinese and I was still speaking Mandarin,” she said.

Jane said it was not until she moved to Darwin to study with CDU that she learnt to think in a new way.

“At CDU the classes were smaller so it meant my language was vastly improved and it was easy to make new friends,” she said. “My advice to new students is to enjoy your studies, make new friends and open your mind to new experiences.”

Commencing midwifery student Cherry Lin arrived in Darwin from Taiwan to study with CDU.

“Back in Taiwan my mother teaches yoga to pregnant women,” she said. “I am also hoping to work in the health services to help women during their pregnancy.”

Confucius Institute Chinese Director Wang Hua said the event was one of several activities planned for students and was held in collaboration with the Chinese Student Union.

The Confucius Institute is a partnership between CDU and the Anhui Normal and Hainan universities in China and is designed to build cultural ties within the community.
