Visit strengthens ties with Cambodia

A group of delegates from Cambodia has visited Charles Darwin University to attend an international symposium on global education and meet with staff to further education collaborations.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks welcomed the visitors including His Excellency the Director General Mr Mak Ngoy, Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.

“For the past four years, we have been working with the Directorate General of Higher Education to help build advanced educational systems in Cambodia,” Professor Maddocks said.

“This work began in 2013 with a Fellowship Agreement, signed by CDU and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in Cambodia.”

Professor Maddocks said the agreement enabled postgraduate learning and teaching services to Cambodian fellowship students.

“Twenty students enrolled and now these postgraduate students are CDU alumni,” he said.

“Some of them are now enrolled (or enrolling) as PhD students, and others hold leadership roles in Cambodia – in their universities and in the Ministry of Education.”

As part of the visit the delegation attended the symposium “Issues in global education: Planning forward”. The event was an opportunity for the CDU community and colleagues from the higher education sector in Cambodia to reflect on the challenges and opportunities in their roles as leaders of social change.
