Musical talent to celebrate opera at the Waterfront

The Opera Gala will be held at the Darwin Waterfront later this month The Opera Gala will be held at the Darwin Waterfront later this month

Nationally acclaimed vocal talent will perform some of the world’s most adored opera classics in an upcoming public performance by the Darwin Symphony Orchestra.

The Opera Gala event will be held this month at the picturesque Darwin Waterfront with the DSO performing opera favourites by composers, including Puccini, Strauss, Gounod, Bernstein and Rogers and Hammerstein.

The performance will include highlights from French composer Georges Bizet’s opera, “The Pearl Fishers”. Set in ancient times on the island of Ceylon, the opera tells the story of how two men's vow of eternal friendship is threatened by their love for the same woman. The friendship duet, known as “The Pearl Fishers Duet”, is one of the most famous duets from operatic repertoire.

Guest artists at the event include one of the country’s leading sopranos, Lorina Gore, and award-winning tenor, David Hobson, who performed in Opera Australia’s La Boheme. Australian baritone, Andrew Jones will also be returning to perform with the DSO after his stellar performance in last year’s Opera Gala event.

DSO Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Matthew Wood has returned to Darwin from London, where he was working at the Royal Opera House, to conduct the evening performance.

Charles Darwin University is the principal sponsor of the DSO.

The public event will be held at the Darwin Waterfront Precinct on Saturday, 23 May from 6.30pm until 9pm. For more information, visit W:
